Power steering noise
I have a power steering gear box and pump from a 1978 installed on my 67C10. The problem is when I turn the wheel all the way to the point the rim stops turning, but oddly I can still move the steering wheel some more, and it starts to squeal loud!! It only squeals like this once the rim stops moving. I find it weird I can rotate the steering wheel some even after the rim stops turning. It there something that should stop the steering wheel from turning this far? I did change the pump today and it still does the same thing. Sorry about the view of the video. It's taken from the back side. If you look closely you can actually see the reservoir and pulley move with the sound.

Re: Power steering noise
Don't do that lol. That's the belt slipping. You can shear off the shaft on the pump holding it on the lock position too long. I've seen it happen. As far as the steering wheel turning more a worn rag joint might allow for a little more movement of the steering wheel after the wheels are at full turn.

Re: Power steering noise
So why is the belt slipping? Is hydraulic pressure some how locking up the pulley when the wheels its turned all the way one direction? Or is there no fix?

Re: Power steering noise
The belt could be old or need to be tightened . Yes it is slipping because the pump is building pressure and getting harder to turn the pulley. Any vehicle with power steering if you turn the wheel and hold it against the lock will whine loud and or slip the belt . You might be able to get the belt to stop making noise but the pump will always whine if you hold it against the stop. At least every vehicle I've ever had did.

Re: Power steering noise
Keeping this thread going....
So how tight should the belt be? My belt is new, seems to be tight, and mine makes a similar noise. Not at the stop but turning in general. No air in the system as far as I know. |

Re: Power steering noise
The rag joint probably isn't going to help with the belt noise. It might be why you feel like you can still turn the wheel even when the actual wheels are at lock position. As far as how tight to get the belt that's hard to explain just tighten it as tight as you can but yet it still has just a touch of movement if you grab it is what I used to do but I haven't had a v belt set up in years . Maybe someone else can chime in. I do remember the power steering belt being a pita to tighten in general.
