What's the widest wheels that will fit uk new member
Hi
Just join the forum as my dad owns '58 apache series 2 big window, long bed. We are from Nottingham, England. My dad is not the most technical minded when it comes to using forums so I thought I would find a site to join as there a good source of information. Parts of the truck aren't the easiest to come buy in England with most parts having to be shipped over costing a lot in postage. We are wanting a new set of alloys, we are wanting the widest possible to fit on to what we believe is the stock axel it's a six stud making wheels harder come buy. My dad's wanting a rat look cross wide drag style if you get what I mean? Any help would be great |

First off measure these areas as you see in this 1st photo, it's basicly the same for trucks as well. Go to this link it will be helpful. http://tri-5.chevyrides.com/rear_tire.php

Also the back spacing of the wheel is important. Some things to keep in mind. A way positive-offset can be a problem for rear wheel bearings due to the load/ placement of the offset of the rim. Look at photos below. Is the truck a fleet side or a step side? The first truck photo is my '56 GMC I wanted the pro street look. the other truck with mini tubs. If you have a step side you only cut open the side of the bed to make room for a wider tire if you have a fleet side you should be ok. However you will have to take into consideration the location of the leaf springs that will limit you as well. You can move the spring inboard or move it under the frame. Then you have to be concerned with , do you want the springs over the axle or under the axle. Will you need to c- notch the frame or not, lowering blocks or lift blocks. Just cruise the site and look at what suits you. I know of a guy I am in touch with in the UK on Flickr maybe you can chat with him. His truck is an Advance Design Chevy truck.

Here is a link to that guy I was talking about ,I think he lives in Scotland. https://www.flickr.com/photos/26014986@N07/sets/ Here is a Ford with the mini tubs. Your dad may want to consider a four link set up and get the clearance he wants without narrowing the rear. but if he wants fatter then you got to cut the axle. This is a close friend of mine take a look at how he got wider tires on his. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?t=440079/

Re: What's the widest wheels that will fit uk new member
Here are some photos of a '58 Fleet side where they mounted the leaf springs under the frame and used a wider rear fender wells/ tubs in the bed. This is a very nice truck but going wider with a stock length axle and a rim with a too positive off-set kind of defeated the whole purpose of getting more clearance. Look at the pictures closely and you will see the front wheel has a deeper dish than the rear wheel. That is the opposite of what you really want. YOU WANT SHALLOW IN THE FRONT AND DEEP DISH in the rear.
Also if you study the photos you will see there is still plenty of room on this truck for a wider tire. It does not have to be pro street just a nice fat look out back with nice deep dish rims. It is kind of hard to get that look without cutting the axle or letting the tires stick out past the fender lip.

Considering the width of the wheel wells /tubs you can see you can get a pretty wide tire under there, but again look at the previous photos and you will see it looks a little awkward with a shallow back rim and a deep dish front rim. Look at the last photo see how deep the brake drum sits in the wheel?

BC, you are very generous with your time!
I found the info helpful, even though I am not adding new wheels/tires.

wide rear tires are fine, but if your running the stock front suspension skinny tires up front make steering easier
especially at low speeds in parking lots

DAN CARPENTER'S SPECIALTIES: http://dancarpenters.com/tubb.html
Howells Sheet Metal: http://fordor.com/category.cfm?cat=S...s&dept=2646rod Also here are your other options coz tubs can be a bit pricey mini or full on race/pro street style. Make your own out of sheet metal or aluminum. Some people use trailer fenders and cut them to fit. Or buy a full size wheel tub from Jegs or Summit Racing and cut them down. The first 2 photos are of Kabwe's trailer fender turned into mini tubs http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php?t=440079/ The photo of the two tubes side by side is from DAN CARPENTER'S SPECIALTIES.

Yeah I really liked it also when I got those trailer fenders for 40 bucks for the pair as opposed to the 285 bucks for some tubs.lol
