???

That is seriously sketchy. How are the reviews for this seller? What is the bid up to now on the item and why would they be willing to sell for less?

Yep, Rick got the same one. I'd send an email back asking if they'll ship COD.

I listed my SHO for sale on the SHO website, and I kept getting similar e-mails from people who wanted to buy it. They were from a foreign country and the shipping/payment guarantees sounded the same as what you got.

It's definately a scam - flush it.

scam

To be clear, did this email originate from the same person who has the radio listed or from an outside source. Sounds like it might just be someone emailing from the list of bidders. If that is the case, would be a great reason to keep bidder IDs confindential. Someone should definitely contact the seller and get the story.

I forwarded the seller the email I recieved and here is his reply.

No ..... it is a scam. I just heard from another Ebay'er that bid on my
item and got this same e-mail. As I told him, judging by the bad spelling
and grammar it sounds like a scam from somewhere overseas. This type of
thing is really making it hard to honest Ebay'er to carry on business.
Thanks for the heads up on this situation. I am going to forward this
e-mail to Ebay and make a report to Ebay as of what is transpiring.
Thanks again for your heads up on this situation.

I get this crap all the time with items I bid on. Anyone that would try and buy from someone emailing them like this would surely be kissing their money good-bye.

And yes its most likely coming from over seas.

Now you could have some fun w/ them, ask em where to send the money, stroke em along waste their time w/ a few emails.

scam update

here is the newest installment in the scam story...Shawn
-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I would have to pass on it unless I could have you send a sample C.O.D. first, from my point of view sending funds in a non-secure transaction to an unknown organization that I was contacted by via email seems kind of a risky way to do business Do you have a phone number or a store front I can contact?

Sounds like a form message sent out whenever the price of an item crosses a certain threshold.

Responding triggers an actual person to come across.

Make an absurdly low ball offer and see what they say.

It seems pretty obvious that it's a scam from overseas. How many of us living in the states make a point of stating U.S. Dollars. I guess that's why ebay warns you to not do business from an unsolicitied e-mail. The letter should be forwarded to ebay's safe harbor. Hopefully they will follow up on it and shut the guy down. Keep him going Shawn. This guy probably got a major woody when a person was asking about ten units.

I was selling a transmission on another board, and got an email asking if I would ship overseas. I guess these kinds of scams are common. They have some off the wall payment method and then you end up getting screwed.

I got this for something I was selling, but it wasn't a bike. He says he deals in bikes. I think I was selling some engine parts.

Hello,
I am an internation business man, specialised in bike purchase, and i also help my foreign client to ship there bike to any place of there desired country or destination, most especially africa, cause i have a shipper who takes care of the shippment, so shipping will not pose any problem. Presently i have a client who has asked me to help him purchase an bike which will be shipped to africa.
So as i was browsing through the internet i saw your advert and i will like to purchase it for my client, but before payment will be made i need to be sure of who i will be dealing with if you are going to be honest and sincere throughout the transaction.
So to start with signifier your interest by forwarding to me your offer as well as your telephone number through the email, after which we can continue with the transaction and i promise if all conditions and agreement are accepted and reached on time, payment will be made out almost immediately.
hoping to here from you as soon as possible, thanks.

There are the occassional people from europe who *are* in that exact situation though!

Parts for imported American vehicles from the older years can be "fun" for them to find.

The scams usually pay you with a method that takes a long time to clear. It'll initially clear quickly and the money goes to your bank account, so you ship the item. Meanwhile a week or two down the road the payment comes back as void and the bank takes the money back. Meanwhile you've already shipped the item. Sometimes they'll ask if they can write for more money so you can give some money they owe the seller. This usually involves a handsome "gift" to the target so the target sends the money forward, in most cases the scammer doesn't even care about getting the item shipped if they can get that partial money first.

Well, that's what I've seen so far.

Thanks,
Ryan

Forward any questionable emails to spoof@ebay.com . That helps them track the source, and they do track them if at all possible.

Western Union is a red flag. The last I'd heard or used Western Union
the business where the scammer picks up
the money is supposed to get the ID of the person getting
their money. They don't have to retain the info (on the driver's
license). So all you'd have as a buyer is a supposed name and they'd have the cash.

I hate to be too pessimistic, but unless you're willing to do a lot of
leg work and spend some money tracking one of these scum down, there's
little to nothing that can be done. The scammers that do this are fishing
for likely targets, and won't likely respond to much that doesn't look profitable.

Oh, and about the parts request from the UK -

I've sold things to people in the UK, and
shipped them USPS, but you've got to know
the limits on weight to do this.

First I'd get an address to ship to and go from there.
If you get an address, you can calculate the
shipping. Usually, they'd want to know the shipping cost - could be a read flag.
(Might have to go UPS or Fed-Ex Air). If you get that far and they're still
serious, you won't have any problem getting
the money. Reserve the right to hold a check,
money order or certified check as long as you
deem necessary up front. You shouldn't have
any complaints from a serious buyer.

LMAO! The price is going up!

"Brand new and in a box?????" Since when are NOS parts considered brand new!

Dear sir,
I have ten units.I don't have picture because all are brand new in sealed box.It the same that is on ebay.
The price for unit is 580 USD including shipping so the total price for ten units is 5800 USD including shipping.
I'll wait your reply.
Have a nice day!

----------------------------------------------------
Original message from me. (Psuedo name and location used)

Dear Sir,

I got your e-mail telling me about these units. I am VERY interested in purchasing a number of these Chevrolet AM-FM units and reselling them for profit. How many do you have on hand? Do you have a digital picture of one so I can verify that it is the right kind? What would be your price for a lot of say 10 or 20 units?

I am very anxious to procure a number of these units. They are very rare and desirable.

Thanks, Tom Morrison
