Screw/Bolt Colour Question
Does anyone know if the 4/5 screws and 4 bolts that hold the cowl on a truck are painted body colour or natural or something else. When my truck was repainted they just used regular new bolts and washers and I have bolts I got from wrecks but the paint ( if any was on ) was all gone. I would appreciate pics.

Re: Screw/Bolt Colour Question
Looks like black oxide on mine, which was a quite generally unmolested truck. I'm frankly surprised they're not painted body color. They really put the cowl on after paint?

Re: Screw/Bolt Colour Question
Cowl screws are stainless, I believe. If its critical I can dig the baggies up of my originals (I used new stainless up there, so not 100% on what it was).

Re: Screw/Bolt Colour Question
The exposed screws on top of the cowl (four total) are stainless panhead type, those that affix the anterior of the cowl at the cowl to hood seal (five total) are Parkerized panhead type with captured washer (same as used to attach the glovebox hinge to the dash).

Re: Screw/Bolt Colour Question
Thanks for the input Dave. I like things to be as original as possible on my truck. The small screws in the photo are the ones i took from an original hugger orange truck at the wreckers. As you can see they have some orange paint still on them. When you pull a cowl from a truck there is body colour in the well underneath which I think would mean the cowl was painted separately and attached during assembly. If that is the case they must have painted the bolts separate if they were body colour as well.

Re: Screw/Bolt Colour Question
This pic is the bigger side bolts and they are from a different truck but had red paint on them when I got them. Can you tell if they are stainless with the grunge off them?
I had to do 2 posts cause I could only attach one picture.

Re: Screw/Bolt Colour Question
Okay, do you know if they were installed in their natural state and painted after install, cause any I've seen in the wrecking yard have body colour on them.

Re: Screw/Bolt Colour Question
Their natural state is Parkerized (phosphate coated) and appear black as shown in Dave's pic above - these were not painted body color or painted black. No such bolts (like those attaching the inner fenders for example) were painted. Maybe some got over spray from touch ups at time of assembly? I believe the painted cowl was installed on already painted cab.

Re: Screw/Bolt Colour Question
You bet! Sounds good. What works really well to over spray off of bolt heads (and other items) is the bronze scraper from a windshield ice scraper - try it. Won't scratch the metal. I'm certain these aren't hard to come by up North
