Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
My pulleys don't line up, any suggestions? the steering pump doesn't line up with the crank shaft pulleys and the water pump pulley doesn't line up with any of them. The water pump is a short shaft all the pulleys except the one on the steering are original to the motor / truck. So do I have the wrong pulley for the steering pump? and did I put the harmonic balancer on too far?
Also I have a factory Air set up, Does any one have photos of what the belt configuration should look like? I cant find it in the shop manuals they don't show any photos of the front of the engine with all the options I have (power steering, air conditioning, driver side alternator)

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
You can not put the harmonic balancer on too far. It is supposed to bottom out against the timing chain gear. Now if that balancer is from a L31 Vortec 350 and you did not install the reluctor ring, then that would account for some of the alignment issue. Have you looked at this thread?
http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=632007 nearly the same issue. BTW It is against the forum rules to post duplicate threads in different sections.

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
For one, the power steering pump is from a 1969-1972 ish truck. I ran that pump on my 400 SB but I used stamped steel pulleys and ended up swapping the PS Pump pulley to get it lined up. You also do not need a double groove on that PS. That style pump and brackets pushes everything out further.
Find the pump that sits in a cradle with a stamped steel adjuster for your setup. Heres a stock setup similar to yours but the other style pump and brackets I mentioned.

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
The reluctor ring is used on the '96-'02 L31 Vortec engines as part of the crank position sensor. It is installed between the balancer and the timing chain gear. Consequently the hub of the balancer is shorter, front to back, to compensate for the thickness of the reluctor ring.

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
So I looks like I might have the wrong pulley on the power steering pump, so I called allen grove components and ordered a single groove pulley that measure out at 1 13/16" from the face of the steering pump, this should put the pulley back in line with the front pulley on the crank shaft. If this doesn't work I will need to order a new pump bracket that will put the pump forward and correct the line up issue.

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
So here is the new pulley, no surprise it doesn't line up. Back to the drawing board. I called Alan grooves again and this time I sent him photos of my setup, he told me that this setup is not factory. He goes on to say that the cast iron pulleys were after market back in 65 and that this was probably added at the dealer ship. Even the ac pump bracket was part of the kit and that it's not factory. Anyone know if this is true? The cast iron pulley has a GM number 3831397

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
I still think I have a pump basket issue, but if you look at the photo the 6066 posted it look like it might be the same as what I have only I can't see the bottom of the bracket on his photo. Any suggestions?

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
I did notice something the pulley I bought and the one 6066 posted are different mine has more of a slop to the front which could be pushing it backwards and I think that is the 1/2" I need. But have been told no one makes a pulley like that. Does any one know if that is true?

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
That's the reason I gave you the GM part number that IS correct for 1966. Its a Positive way of identifying parts. Your CAST pulleys are 100% GM and have the part number cast in them. Your power steering PUMP AND BRACKET are from 1969-1972 truck. This is what I said Im not certain they will work because it MAY be a different offset than the correct 1966 pump and bracket. Theres at least 3 different single groove PS pulleys, all different offsets . I can see right off that the one he sent you is the wrong offset. Is there a GM part number in this new pulley ?

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
Alan is correct in one respect, the aftermarket did make cast iron pulleys but it was for many different aftermarket AC systems and aftermarket AC brackets. So far everything you have on your engine looks correct and factory GM. But remember, most people have never seen original 1964-1966 truck factory air parts, especially when it comes to the engine pulleys and brackets, that stuff was discarded long ago if an air truck made it to the Midwest.

Re: Need help with my pulley set up for my 65 v8
Here is a link to another post on the same problem on an AIR truck. We confirmed the PS pulley number 3791943 in post 21 from member HOTFUN as being correct. You can also see the correct PS pump and brackets in the pictures posted in the thread. You will notice a different water pump pulley in his pictures. The one on his truck was used on DEALER installed air, your pulleys are from FACTORY installed air . Same exact in dash air as yours though.
