Re: A833 Rebuild
I got the suggestion from a transmission shop in PA that works on them, max HP level for power shifting is around 300, granny shifting is good for lots more power.

As far as clutch linkage, I was looking at using a hydraulic throw out bearing. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/GM-Sto...ring,1945.html Question, how exactly does this mount up to the transmission? Does it more or less float on the input retainer? |

Re: A833 Rebuild
Again I remind you this is NOT the same A-833 as in a Dodge B-body. The aluminum case and no bushing and the gear flip greatly reduce the torque capability of this trans. If you power shift this at 300HP there will be pieces on the floor pretty quick. In the GM application there are no 350 or big block uses for a reason. About 200HP or 300 lb-ft seems to be the limit.
I believe the later model trans uses ATF. The synchro material and tolerances may have changed. I would be tempted to use whatever GM calls for, in a synthetic flavor. Unfortunately the owners manule in the 87 is long gone, but I bet Keith still has his.

Re: A833 Rebuild
The GM MY6 would be very similar to the Aluminum case 70's & 80's Dodge Ram A833 OD they put behind the 318 & Slant 6. The bigger V8 engines like the 360 got you a NP435 Cast Iron top loader similar to the SM465. I had an 81 Dodge D100 with the leaning tower of power and an OD Aluminum case A833. Dodge always leaned toward the lighter weight gear oils rather than ATF till the early 80's. I believe it was changed to meet CAFE standards not for longevity of the transmission. The internals didn't change.
BTW I only posted the B body board info because it was easy to find. My 383 Monaco 500 is a fuselage C-Body just like the 1969 Fury, Polara, Newport, New Yorker, and 300.... She's a land yacht. The 383 & 440 equipped 69 Fury and Monaco 500 were the only C-Bodies that had an Iron Case A833 4 speed stock. I grafted a Fury setup into a Polara when I was in high school RIP old buddy.

Re: A833 Rebuild
Well I ditched the hydro throwout bearing idea. Going with the AA bracket and a factory slave cylinder. Cheaper too, plus if I have a failure out on the road its an easily available part and I don't have to pull the trans to replace.

Re: A833 Rebuild
you dont need the aa bracket if you find an 85-87 bellhousing, from a factory hydro clutch truck. it has the dual pattern to fit either transmission on it from the factory, so it will bolt on.

Re: A833 Rebuild
Eric did you ever complete this rebuild, and got the transmission installed?

Re: A833 Rebuild
Well life happened. I did get a shifter and replacement gearset, it's all in a crate and sitting in my garage now. Yes I have a garage! Bought a house last October and been moving and fixing other cars that have broken since. I'll finish the rebuild and likely put it up for sale at some point.
