No peg legs
]Rebuilding the 12 bolt in my 71 swb. And I am just about to put it together with just new bearings .and seal. But it's been nagging me that I should do a locker and maybe change the gears. What are people using for a locker? it's not a race truck. Just a DD

Re: No peg legs
Auburn Gear or Tru-Trac. Both strong and street friendly

Re: No peg legs
Detroit Locker with 3:73 gears, on a DD. Let me tell ya, when that locker unloads, it feels like the rearend is gonna blow. Other than that, its great, as i do not have to remember to flip a switch, or anything else.

Re: No peg legs
I personally think lockers are dangerous on the street. Lock one up when you're not going drag-strip straight and you're in for a sad day. Our vehicles don't have traction control, so say hello to the light pole.
That was my take anyway. I went with a standard clutch posi in the truck's Dana60 and a Helical gear TruTrac in the 9-inch in my Camaro. Happy with both. On the dragstrip, get a locker or a spool. On the street, with the huge front weight bias of our trucks, I'd stick with something a little more forgiving.

Re: No peg legs
Not to highjack the thread but could someone give me a simple definition of a "locker"?

Re: No peg legs
A normal clutch posi, when the wheels turn a different speed, uses (as you can imagine) a clutch pack to try to keep the wheels together, but still slip on corners.
A locker is more like a ratcheting system. When one wheel goes faster than the other by enough delta, the fast wheel will force the slow wheel to catch up by that mechanical ratcheting action. So they're locked together. That's how I understand it anyway. Others may have more detail or accuracy.

Re: No peg legs
The reason I was thinking locker is because I get a lot of one will spin. Welding the spiders and a Detroit is out, you do need some give when you turn corners. The auburn tru trap sounds like a possibility.
When GM put lockers in, what were they using? |

Re: No peg legs
Welding the spiders on any street driven vehicle is a bad idea. No matter how "temporary" it is.
An Eaton Posi-traction unit is great for a street DD. Plus they are rebuildable, where the Auburn Gear cone-style Posi unit is not. Best 400 bucks you'll ever spend on your truck. Gary

When you're going in a straight line, it's fine, the tires are spinning at the same speed. Go around a corner and the outside tire literally spins faster than the inside tire because it has a greater distance to travel. Weld your spiders together and it's going to eventually break going around a corner at normal driving speeds. This can be done on trail rigs and rock crawlers, 1/4 and 1/8 mile race cars because they only make turns at slow speeds or in the rock crawlers and trail rigs case, the tires just slip in the mud or gravel. Do you ever hear the tires chirp/squeal going around a bend?

Re: No peg legs
I have an Auburn Pro posi unit in mine (found it on eBay new for $300 which is about half price...couldn't pass it up), but I have had a true trac and an Eaton...I liked the Eaton a lot.
Now, my F#rd Bronco has ARB air lockers in it and if there were no budget, I'd say they are the bomb, but man they are PRICEY!!! But best of both worlds...open differential for commuting and Locker with the flip of a switch... |
