I got rejected by Grundy.

Hi all.

I am shopping for specialty insurance for my '68. I sent in the pictures posted below. I think the agreed upon price was somewhere around $8,000 or $8,500 which I don't think is too far out of line for insurance value.

They came back and said they turned it down because it's a work-towing-hauling truck, Rusty-scratched bed and that it's not a collector vehicle.

My truck is no $40,000 trailer queen but I consider it a nice survivor truck with some cool pretty cool options for '68.

Does anyone else have specialty insurance on a truck in similar condition to mine?

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

Does your truck even have a trailer hitch?!
I can't help (I'm just curious about the subject) but I know insurance has been discussed here before. I'm sure someone with actual experience will chime in.

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

I've had a ball on the step bumper before but haven't used it for years. I've used it for nothing but cruising and light errands for the last few years.

It might be easier to sell as a collector truck if I put a chrome bumper on the back.

Seems ridiculous to me. Looks like a beautiful truck that would qualify in my book. Maybe try hagerty

I love the old farm bumper, that probably make it a work truck

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

Tow truck? I recently tried to use my 72 C10 to rent a car trailer and haul another C10. U-haul said it's not big enough to tow the car hauler. Does your state issue "classic vehicle" license plates? That and the chrome rear bumper you think might do it. LOL OK not funny.
I can't see those hubcaps very good. Do you have pictures posted that shows them?

Won't be a problem for Anpac. I just insured my rusty '50 chevy project for 10k.

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

Both my project trucks are much worst then yours, much worst. They are both insured with Grundy. I think I insured them at about $5000 ea. Maybe you made some kind of statement in your app that they didn't like, like using it as an every day driver or something like that.

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. I can't remember which company it was. Later I found a classic car insurer that would cover it, but decided not to do it after reading the fine print. Basically, I wouldnt be allowed to drive it all unless it was in a parade or to a car show.

Finally, I called the agent who covers my other cars and they were able to give me a stated value policy of some type without all the restrictions. Even that took some work according to my agent. Not sure why it's so hard to get old trucks insured for what they are worth.

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

Thanks everyone.

I perhaps should have expanded during the application on the fact that it's a survivor truck and not restored. I also had the 327 rebuilt a few years ago and detailed up the engine bay bone stock. I don't really remember any places in the application that invited me to do this. Perhaps I missed it.

My driving habits for my truck really fits speciality insurance requirements. Perhaps I'll have to dress it up a bit more so it looks less like the old farm truck that it is.

I only have liability insurance on it now. I'd hate to have the truck itself uninsured if something happens to it.

Hagerty insured my truck for $12k. Only cost me $222 for a year with $0 deductible. Had to pay the entire year upfront.

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

I use farm bureau and they insured my capri for restored value they just made me fill out a big form marking what all made it valuable and took there own pictures of it and then insured it for the value I put on it. have you talked to your local insurance people out covering it at full value? other option is you can get a certified appraisal done on it and turn that in to get it covered at it's real value

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

Hagerty will insure it. These companies have certain requirements basically stating that you are going to take care of it and keep it out of harms way to paraphrase. If you stated you were going to haul or tow with it, chances are this is not a vehicle they will insure as it in their mind is a daily driver that is more work than play. Leave out the tow and emphasise the limited play and they will insure.

I'm having a hard time believing this. Something is missing... did you tell them it would be a daily driver (no classic insurance company will insure a DD). It also has to be stored in a locked garage, you have to have a registered daily driver, etc.

I would call them and talk to a real person.

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

Also check with National Corvette Museum (Adam), They insure through American Modern Insurance. I got like a $300yr quote to insure my truck for $17k but of course there are stipulations like mentioned above.

Try Condon and Skelley (a division of Met Life). They are pretty good on reasonable driving and leaving them unsupervised.

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

Hagertys wanted to store it in a bomb proof concrete building with an armed guard and only drive it on the 6th Sunday of the month after you got a certified appraisal. Safeco was much easier to deal with.

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

I too had an issue insuring, seemed finicky. So decided to go with Safeco and insured the GMC Short Wide for $25,000 and the Blazer for $30,000. Just added it to my policy and each is about $1,100/year. But I or anyone can drive it anywhere anytime.

American Collector rejected me... no explaination... my guess was the estimated mileage driven... I put 3000 miles a year. Went with my State Farm agent.

Re: I got rejected by Grundy.

The way I insured My truck For Full Value is, I Had My 72' SWB C-10 Appraised by a Certified Appraiser and Took the appraisal Papers in to my insurance Company and got it insured based on That Value and they had No Problems Just left them a copy of all the Paperwork.
