would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
I had SMS do my full interior new on my 67 GMC build. beautiful work but it took 2 years + to get this done. No biggie I am in no hurry. Anyway I received the last piece of the puzzle today. The headliner. Everything looks awesome but the grain in the headliner is way different than my visors, seats and door panels. would you complain about this or be happy. color is good.

If you wait two years and shell out big bucks, I would want it perfect.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
Thats ashame after waiting all that time and money. you notice it because its yours. display it to some of your friends with out pointing it out and ask them what they think of the workmanship, they probably won't notice it as I wouldn't have either if you didn't point it out. It does look awsome. I would have been slightly disapointed if it were mine, but I don't think I would wait for another to be made. I say put it on and enjoy the ride....

Were they the same grain from the factory? I've never noticed. ....I would want it right though

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
Not trying to hijack your thread but does SMS have a template for the 67 GMC interiors? I ordered the vinyl from them thinking the seams for the buddy buckets and door panels were sewn but realized after that they are heat pressed. Also why did it take 2 years to get everything to you? I agree that if you waited that long it should be done exactly how you want it.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
i doubt you'd get a matching grain if you try a half dozen or so headliners// but if you're willing to keep paying the additional shipping i'd say go for it

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
Did you call then and ask why the grains are so different? Just for comparison, there is a big difference in the grains and textures between my factory interior components.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
I did email them with this pic. I dont mind a little change but this is a completely different pattern. I guess the fact that my visors overlap it is what bothers me and then you can easily see it. Otherwise it would be hard to notice from the seats.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
The grain in the headliners never matched the grain sun visors from the factory. Usually not even the colors matched. The headliner, door panels, and seat covers would have matched but that's it. Dash pad and sun visors were produced by different venders for GM and is why they don't match. If you want everything to match, you would have to buy the material and take it to a custom upholstery shop. WES

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
I know they didn't match from factory. I just thought that because I had sms make all of these fresh new with new vinyl supplied by them that it would all be made from the same style vinyl. Everything else was the same style. I did not buy these aftermarket. They supplied and heat pressed everything themselves.

And in no way am I bashing their work. It is beautiful and it takes time to provide a service such as this. I will wait for their response and if they agree to help without fuss I will change it out. If not I will keep it and not look up lol.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
A 14 month expected delivery date that turned into TWO years. No freakin way, I bet it cost a small fortune too. It should be perfect, I bet they took so long to complete that they ran out of the material they started with and their new supply has a different grain. If it takes your staff two years to complete a upholstry job then you are not running your buisness correct.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
OH, I misunderstood the post. As long as you clearly explained that you wanted the grain to match everything then I would at least call them to see what happened. I don't think that SMS made your visors though. They look like the ones that everyone else sells. I personally wouldn't want them to match because I don't like the grain look on the visors or dash as far as that's concerned, but that's just me. Build it like you want it or you won't be happy. WES

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
here is a pic of the rest of the work they did. it all matches and looks great. I ll let you all know what they say when I get a response. Honestly I didn't ( and still don't) have a finished truck to install these into yet so the time spent waiting doesn't bother me. Wes you are correct. the Dash pad does not match but it was new. SMS did not cover it.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
Wes is right (again!). They weren't factory matching in the first place. So to me; no real harm, no real foul. BTW, you are a very patient person, that's a credit to your character but 2 years? That's a statement about them.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
as I am going thru the stuff from sms I discovered another flaw. The pattern isn't in line with the original door panel covers ( which I set to them so unless they don't know how to use a tape measure??). I am going to call back and get this fixed. I will have a pressed area where a mounting bolt is. will it rip there as the material gets older and it gets removed periodically? I did pay a small fortune and had quite the wait so now I am getting unhappy. just want it right.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
Just to update this thread. I did return this headliner in 2014 and only today, 2 years later, did I receive my headliner. They did a nice job and correct color now but for the $$$ I paid the wait and service I wouldn't deal with them again. Nice product though. It took over 4 years to complete my interior. Really it's not the wait or the final product so much that would keep me away but tons of unresponded emails thar were months between I never hounded them bur shouldn't have to.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
I'm 55 and I cant remember any vehicle from the '60's or '70 that had a headliner texture to match the vinyl panels. Probably because it was a different sort of material.
For that matter, I can't remember any of these GM trucks coming stock with a headliner. When did that start? On what models?

Yeah, I was just gonna say that on my totally original 69 GMC, the tin door panels match the tin headliner perfectly.

Re: would you return this headliner or am i being too picky
If you asked for it in the same vinyl, then send it back - and tell them to expedite! If you didn't, I think it looks perfect as is - but what I think doesn't matter. Did they tell you they could do it in the same type vinyl as the headliner (or is it vice versa you seek)? Sorry to hear of your troubles, know what you mean when you go to so much trouble to get something custom and it doesn't turn out like you expect. Argh. Hope you get it sorted out. I've had issues with SMS also, but they've kinda cornered the market on this stuff it seems. They have always eventually come around and provided what I was looking for (was always stock though). Tim of Truckseats was a big help as I had originally ordered through him - but I did have to deal with SMS directly on scroll work for a highlander seat, they don't normally do the scroll like the factory did on highlander seats.
