Extra Gas Tank Removal, '72 GMC

My pickup has 2 extra tanks and I need to remove them both to do some cleanup work. They may go back on they may not, the in cab tank is in good shape and this is not my daily.

So, my question is what tool is required to get these things out? From the underside of the cans, it looks as tough there is a spot for a 3/8" drive with 2 small holes on either side. I tried to just place a 3/* drive in there but it's too small and will strip the female if I give it the beans with a breaker bar.

Can anyone put me onto the correct tool here?

Not sure if you can see in there with a flash light. Mine where easy to remove. I think I used a deep 9/16s with a 12 inch extension. I sprayed them with penetrate for about a week before trying.

I had to cut the bolts out with a grinding wheel from the top of the bed. It was a pretty simple deal but be careful those tanks are pretty heavy. My tanks were completely rotted on the inside and full of rust and corrosion, so no way to reuse them anyway. Now getting ready to remove the riveted doors on the side of the bed and put a patch panel in.

They are just carriage bolts on top to long nuts on the bottom. I'm pretty sure I just used an impact and 3/8 or 1/2 inch extension. I broke on and have only replaced itr with all thread and ny-locs. Mine were in pretty good shape so I just cleaned and flex sealed them.

i had to cut mine out as well. they were rusted tight to the nut. one of the bolts was rusted to the tank...

Do those senders have wiring to them? I would like to get that same setup. My lines come out of a fuel hose on the side of the tank.

mine had a switch on the floor but no sending unit for fill level if that's what you mean.

Yeah I have the switch and no floats too.

i took the sending unit out of the incab tank and put it in my saddle tank.

OK, this is driving me nuts...... This is a pic of the underside of the tank and the piece I do not know how to remove.

You're supposed to be able to put a socket handle on there and turn them loose. Mine were rusted on so I had to grid the tops of the bolts off.

When I had the tank on the shop floor, the bolts were rusted in the holes through the tank. I used a BFH to drive the bolts out. The tanks are plate steel so they do take some abuse.

When I had the bolts out I cleaned those holes out with various tools to remove the Wyoming clay and rust.

The tank I sent to a shop to be cleaned as it had a leak in a corner. They said because of the plate steel they were able to fix the tank for use. They stated that a stamped sheet metal tank that old with that type of leak would have been a goner.

When I got it back I made long carriage bolts out of short, 1/2" carriage bolts and 1/2" all thread. The re-habbed tank has been hanging there for at least 10 years and is used every time I fill the truck.

Good grief, shove a short 3/8'' or 1/2'' extension on your ratchet and give it a tug and see what happens

Can anyone tell me how to remove the behind the seat tank of my 1972 Chevy C10? Additionally, how do I move the seat back forward, there is no lever.

I had to pull the seat out first on my '68 C/10. I find this part takes 2 guys. If it still has the cardboard behind the seat, pull that. Then disconnect the fuel level sender wire [Brown]. Remove gas cap. Siphon the gas out of the tank. Remove seat belts. Disconnect any fuel feed hoses at the bottom. ['72s have an additional return line, or vapor line, I think, '68s have just the one.]
Now you can get to the tank itself. Mostly, it's bolted to the cab floor. Remove these bolts, and it should come free. Pull from the passenger side up and away, while your buddy shoves the filler neck down thru the grommet.

With the seat out, you can work on your slide mechanism.
