Fuel gauge voltage reducer

So I thought I had my fuel gauge figured out with a 7805 voltage reducer from radio shack. After it didn't work, I took it out and hooked it up to my volt meter and it was reading 12v off each terminal.
When it was hooked up, the gauge never did anything.
So maybe I got a bad voltage reducer, so I've got a new one with a couple capacitors to test out before I install it.
I was searching around and found this reducer. . Would it work?

Subscribed.....I used the recommended ones from several sites and the gauge worked on 6v now doesnt work at all???

the one you show is a larger amp style for heater fans etc from what I have read.

Either my gauge is toast, or the Suzuki sending unit is at a different ohm rating. I read that some sending units have different resistances.
The voltage reducer has 12v going in, and 5v coming out.
I just about have the tank topped off, so I should be getting some sort of reading if I have this hooked up right.
Two wires from sending unit. Ground is grounded, other wire goes to one of the terminals on the back of the gauge. Power goes into voltage reducer, then out to the other gauge terminal. That sound right?

Almost all senders are different and i doubt a suzuki sender would work with a GM of that year
