Re: 1968

Today, I made a 4 x 4 hole in the backing bracket for the flip down tag holder. I really like the flip down tag holder, it stays open when I am putting gas in the tank. This way I don't have to fight with the tag. The hole is for the gas inlet to go through. I also painted the backing bracket and the flip down tag holder black. I made the holes in the tag light square. This way I can use 1/4" stainless square holed bolts. I call them stove bolts, but I can't remember what they are really called at this moment. I painted the tag light black on the outside. Everything was going alone just fine until I ran into a snag. My bumper came in today. It was shipped in by UPS. Well the bumper box was damaged and the bumper was scratched. UPS is going to come out Monday and take a look see. I hope we can come up with something. So, now I am at a stand still again. No big problem, just another hurter to jump.

Your square hole came out great. I was in a hurry when I did mine. Now after seeing yours I am taking mine out and cleaning it up. ( I needed to paint it anyway) Where did you get the style of plate that stays down? Local or ebay?

I bought the rear bumper, backing plate, flip down and tag light from Brian in Ks., he switch from a step side to a fleet. A package deal, but he bought it from LMC The flip down can be mounted up or down what ever way you like. Or you can go to a bone yard and het one from a 1992 caprice. The square hole came out real nice. After I cut it out I took a file and smooth the rough edges and rounded the edges a little. then three coats of black

Re: 1968

I have been looking for the proper install on the rear bumper brackets. I thought they were straight with the frame. I found out later that they are suppose to be at a slight angle with the frame. I had to make a call to Ks. to get the right position of the brackets. So, now I am in line to install the brackets Monday. The brackets at a slight angle just didn't look right. But all the holes line up and there it is I don't know everything about these trucks.

Re: 1968

Got to repaint the tag bracket. The paint lifted, looks like a old mans skin. Older than me. I will have to sand blast the paint off I put on the tag bracket and then paint it again.

Re: 1968

I sand blasted the flip tag bracket today. Also painted it. it came out real nice this time. Don't know why the paint lifted, maybe some chemical was on it from the factory.
I mounted the rear bumper brackets/braces. They all line up like they should. Installed the front turn signal with new lens gaskets. I put the tail gate chain covers on also. I installed the interior rear view mirror it also is chrome. Did I say chrome will get you home. Well it will. Now I will have to wait for the rear bumper to be replaced. UPS will pick up the first one that was shipped to be tomorrow. It has a lot of scratches on it, so it has to be replaced by UPS.

Re: 1968

Today, I sanded the rear bed sill it was showing a little wear, like scratches. I did not like the way it looked. Then I painted it with raddle can black, now it looks a lot better. Removed the bumper braces and re-installed them with shorter bolts and new lock washers. 1/2 inches shorter bolts, now it don't look like I just used any bolts that I could fine. Nothing wrong with the bolts it just looked to busy. Put the final coat of paint on the tag holder.

UPS came by today and picked up the bumper that was damaged in shipment. Don't know how long that will take. I hope not too long. I want to rewire the truck this month and I would like to have the tank and bumper installed. I don't want anymore breaks in the wires than I can help.

Re: 1968

Today, I installed the 4 washers on the pass side front turn signal. Now the turn signal is level. It is amazing what a little love will do. Then I drilled the holes for the Camaro gas tank supports. I for got to take pictures so I will do so tomorrow. I removed the tail lights. Getting ready for a stainless set of tail lights from a fellow board member. Can't wait to see what they look like on MY truck. Still no word on the rear bumper.

Re: 1968

Well, here are the pictures of the supports for the Camaro gas tank. The front turn signal where I put three or four washers. Now it sets straight. I am a firm believer in pictures. I guess that is why I have 81 pages in my build. I still a way to go but, I now can see the rear door it is now open a little. Now, I am waiting on UPS for another bumper. It's the little things that take a lot of time on these builds. I made the tank supports to short. have to re-do the supports 1 whole day shot.

Has anyone ever used chrome conduit for the tail lights for a step side bed. here is a picture of the conduit. I bought it from Classic parts and can't figure out where or how it attaches.

Re: 1968

Today, I was bored so I thought I would get ahead of the tank and brackets. Every thing I touched turned to crap. Welded a bolt to the supports. I thought they looked real good, until I notice the supports were upside down. So I had to remove the welded bolt and turn them over and re-weld a bolt on each end. A whole day wasted. Tomorrow I will pick up some 3/8 all thread rod. This I will use on the tank straps on the rear of the tank. The only place that is not covered with my canopy is where I was working. The rear of the truck. The sun beating down on my back, so I had enough of that so I quit and went inside for a tall glass of green tea.

Thanks. I do try and sometimes I fail. again thanks. I thought the same when I looked at other guys trucks. But, the end result is what I go for, not the trip.

it don't run so I would have to push it. No one to help push is a little problem. But I am working on a solution to this.

Re: 1968

Today, I had another look at the Camaro gas tank supports. They would work but, it just wasn't clean enough. So I took everything apart and started again.
cut two pieces of 2 1/2x 2 1/2x1/8 square tubing 28'' long and bolted them to the cross members. I know the square tubing is a little over kill but, The welding shop didn't have the 2x3 that I wanted. I picked up two pieces of 1x1/8 36'' long aluminum. tomorrow I will make my straps.

well, back to square one on the rear bumper. UPS would not pay for the damages so the bumper was trashed. It was a shame for the bumper traveled from Ks. to Fl. and back to Ks. So in a few days I will order another one.

Re: 1968

Today, I mounted the Camaro gas tank. Made my strapping out of 1x1/8 inch aluminum
got it where it needs to be. Except I will have to move it forward a bit I think. I need the bumper to adjust that. I also mounted the tail gate and I used stainless bolts.
You can see black tape on the clear chain covers. If I did not put the tape it looked like a round ball. This way it can form to this shape. Let the sun do its magic.

Well, I hope that the stainless tail lights and stainless tail lights brackets come in by Monday. They were shipped the first of the week from Ks.
also ordered a set of spray nozzles and a steering wheel. Hope to mount the spray nozzles and cowl one day this week. Again
