58 GMC retro radio options

I only found one radio replacement out there for my 58 gmc, retro look with modern featues. Just under 500 bucks. Thinking about putting another less expensive retro unit in the middle of dash and removing the ashtray. I have the radio delete plate to go over the stock radio holes. Got pics/ides?

Re: 58 GMC retro radio options

Google Custom Autosound. They have 3 different units that'll fit in the factory hole. All 3 are considerably less than $500 even including freight.
One of them is actually even a cassette player which also has an iPod input. Old and new, living in together in harmony ;-)

I went to their site and they have no listings for 58 GMC only 47-53 and 60-63.

This is the only unit I can find to fit in the factory hole at 499.00

I'm thinking of getting this unit and putting it in the center of the dash where the ashtray is. 60-63 Ford falcon radio...the shape kinda goes with the GMC instrument panel.

Re: 58 GMC retro radio options

This is the 55-59 GMC dash.

The radio goes in the lower curve of the dash. See filler plate for location . The radio is unique to the GMC.

dyno : you might want to consider this one for the ash tray area http://www.retrosoundusa.com.au/inde...t_detail&p=318

OK, sorry, brain fart. Saw the GMC, but it didn't register. I was thinking Chevy.

If you've got the delete plate you might consider CA's SecretAudio system as an alternative to cutting the dash.

Re: 58 GMC retro radio options

RetroSound has a much better reputation than Custom AutoSound does. Many people complain about the quality of the Custom AutoSound units but I haven't had one myself.

I have a RetroSound in my '57 3200 and am very happy with it.

I also have an Antique Automobile Radio (aka Vintage Auto Radio) in my '55. That is the same manufacturer as the radio linked to up above from Classic Parts. It's an expensive unit. It's OK but not as good as the RetroSound unit. I bought the expensive one for my Bel Air because it looks like the original radio but I wish it worked a little better.

Re: 58 GMC retro radio options

i haven't listened to the radio in any of my vehicles for years, mp3 music is all listen to
while truk has a head unit receiver i think my next truk stereo will be mp3 player hooked directly to an amp
i have not embraced the use of a smart phone yet, but if you have one that is what i'd use

I like to listen to mp3 music too.
I like the fact that the RetroSound unit will play mp3's directly from an SD card and a USB drive.
The Antique Automobile Radio unit I have in my Bel Air will not do this. It only has a Aux input for an MP3 player like an iPod or smart phone. It's a pain to use those in a car though and they aren't 12V switchable.

I just ordered THIS 12V switchable mp3 player for my Bel Air a couple of days ago. I'm going to put it in the glove box.

The only downside to this unit is that you can't choose your music by directory structure. It plays the music in the order you write it to the card/drive. However, you can skip to a song by entering it's relative number.

Re: 58 GMC retro radio options

Looks like Retrosound is in Australia. They must have a US distributor.

I do have the radio delete plate to cover the stock holes. I have no use for the ashtray other than for coins to rattle in, so the radio is going there.

I use the iphone for music and pay 10.00/month for Spotify for unlimited music. So i will either bluetooth or use the aux jack on the radio. Looking forward to listening to some of my classic country and southern rock when i get the ol girl on the road!

I wish it was Aussie based, then we might get something cheaper.

Re: 58 GMC retro radio options

As stated above, simple/cheap fix is aux input directly to an amp. I mounted my amp under the seat with the input cord coming through the bench seat like a seatbelt. I can use my smart phone or ipod would also work with alot of satellite radio receivers. Nothing visible and plenty of sound.

Re: 58 GMC retro radio options

This is the model I'm putting in where the ashtray goes. Has all the modern features including bluetooth. I don't even need to enlarge the hole.
