69 maroon interior

Hi - new to the board.

Starting to work on the 69 GMC that I have owned for the past 27 years. It appears that this was the only year that maroon was used on the interior. Brothers and LMC do not seem to stock the dash pad or arm rests in this color. I would like to go back original. Is dying a suitable option? Other suggestions? Any input is appreciated.

Re: 69 maroon interior

The two-tone maroon and red looks nice. Here are some pictures to get you going. Dyeing might be the easiest route. I have the Ditzler paint codes for the maroon trim color and the flat upper dash paint if they would help any. Did some research when I was looking at a 69 CST in maroon with the red/maroon interior (first picture). The second is a good overall picture and the rest are of another very nice 69 I have several more pictures of if they would help.

Re: 69 maroon interior

Here is a clip from the Ditzler 69 Chevrolet/GMC truck chart.

Also a lot of nice pictures can be found at these two links of a nice 69 K2500 with a maroon interior and worth grabbing as a reference.

Re: 69 maroon interior

The 69 GMC on ebay is an excellent reference and one of my favorite color combos. Thank you for the paint info. Take care, Bruce

Re: 69 maroon interior

The maroon interior is my favorite. It is not as rare as the dark blue (69 only) and most of it can be found with patience. The hardest piece will be the dash pad and mirror mount cover. For some reason they are always cracked or missing. Horn buttons exist - even a few NOS pieces are out there.
Bucket seat and consoles are out there but those who have them hoard them...apparently

I have been collecting maroon, dark blue, and now 70 only gold.
Good luck on your hunt!

Re: 69 maroon interior

Here are some pics from a 69 CST I had. I added the pic of the buckets for info. When I had the truck a board member sent me pics of the buckets in the dark maroon.

Re: 69 maroon interior

Cool color. Never seen one in person.

That Ditzler color sheet isn't the most accurate for interior parts. The "seat separator" is listed as body color for Dk Blu trucks, but it wasn't from the factory (it was injection molded in some kind of blue plastic - body color is close enough for wholesale replacement but it wasn't "right").

If you're going to shoot plastics, particularly dashboards that might have seen silicon or armor-all in their lifetime, prep is key. I would go to an autobody shop and grab the right prep. For PPG they have a one-time-use expensive sponge with a scrubber on one side and chemical prep impregnated into the sponge. I've used it and had great results.

I generally shoot a coat of adhesion-promoter too. That's just rattle can.

You probably then need three steps - primer, base, clear. I think semi-flat like 'Fixed'n'Flat' looks good.

By the time you're done buying supplies you MIGHT be able to get it done at "Just Dashes" cheaper if you're not doing other interior parts too.

Edit: remember each coat will "sink" your grain a little. If you get too thick the vinyl grain doesn't show up as well. I guess light coats?

Thumbs up Re: 69 maroon interior

Thanks guys for the good info and pictures. Nice inspiration and quite a lot to digest. Leaning toward purchasing white replacement parts and dying /painting. I will keep you posted.

Re: 69 maroon interior

White to maroon is a big jump. I'd recommend starting with red parts then darkening them with dye until they match.

Re: 69 maroon interior

I have seen those buckets. Nice. I think he's got the console too.
Hope he decides to sell someday. I'm game
I have buddies for the current build. They will be covered in maroon before long.
Dark blue buckets and console in that condition would be sharp too IMHO.
Cheers

Re: 69 maroon interior

I have made some progress. New dash, arm rests, radio, heater controls, steering wheel and seat. Need a second job to keep up!

Napa vinyl maroon paint met the need.

Re: 69 maroon interior

isint this the same maroon used in 67 also? both my trucks have had red interior. and yes that dash is hard to find.
my 67 is actually orange but the manufacturer painted the top of my dash red to match the dash pad and the vents. funny huh?

Re: 69 maroon interior

My '69 CST is that medium red exterior with the dark red interior like the last few pictures SS Tim posted. Never liked the color combination but I also didn't realize that interior was a '69 only option. Pretty cool info. Thanks y'all.
