68 c10 454 bb

Hi everyone new to the forum i recently just purchased a 1968 c10 shortbed with a 454 big block turbo 350 trans and a 410 gear, im searching for advice as to what transmission to swap into it im after something with overdrive and that will hold up well with the 454 any info would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance!

welcome aboard!!! 700r4 if your budgets tight and your 454 is mild. 4L80E if you got some cash, thats your best option...

appreciate the info got another question for you im wanting to be able to drive this truck when i want to country roads,highways etc thinking about gearing the rear 342 but im torn between 342 and 373 a lot of people tell me to go 373 but ive heard that there really isnt much difference between 373 and 410 any input would be greatly appreciated

2004r would be my choice , with the 700r4 you will have to cut the driveshaft , and if you run a 700 be aware the low gear is very low , with the 411s in there now you would need some very tall tires

You need to keep in mind the the first gear on the 770R4 is super low and with the torque you will be blowing the tires off if not careful. that is why some say go with the 42's or 73's being the lowest. Out of the three trucks I'm building two will be 454 trucks and have not decided on the overdrive or not. That is not an issue of having them cause I have some 4L60E and 4L80E laying around. One might get a 4L80E [supposed to be my personal truck but we all know how that goes] I would go with the 700 and 3:42's and drive on. I built a custom "copy" of what I thought GM should have done in 1990 with the SS454 and built a extra cab and used a 342 and a built 700. It was a fun truck and got decent mpg. Jim

4l80e with 3.73 would be my choice behind a big block. I heard stock 700r4 can't handle a lot of power but I've never used one so I wouldn't know for sure.

Above is my vote. You've got to at least put some extra money into the 700 r to get it to hold up over time behind the big block. Not to mention dealing with it searching between gears at 40-50. I've had a few of them and don't plan to use them anymore. Some people love them... I'm not one of them. My '98 is a Factory big block truck and the 80e is original with 200,000 on the clock and no signs of giving up. Enough said!

The lockup speed on a 700R4 is adjustable in the PROM if you use fuel injection. If you use the vacuum setup, you can add a switch to turn it off so it won't hunt.

4L80E is a fine transmission, but you have to have a computer to run it.

I'm going to be running a 468 with a TCI built 700r4 (traded into the trans) and 3.42 gears with a 30" tall rear tire. It should be great at 60-70mph.
