Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
A few more pictures. Fuel pump stuff later. The carb was generic. A local Quick Fuel carb expert selected it and finalized the build and jetting. The jetting was also adjusted per the dyno testing. If interested I can find out more how it was built. The dyno results show it to be a very efficient set-up for the street.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
Fuel pump info, it is a GM high performance unit, I think around 1964 or 1965 was the first year these were used on 365 and 375 H.P. 327 engines. The casting is a little different then the 1965 unit.
"Can be used on all Chevrolet 283-400ci V8 engines. Pump has 7 psi shutoff pressure, 3/8-18 inlet and outlet ports and has a free flow rating of 110 gallons per hour. Technical Notes: 6.5 to 8 psi at 1800 rpm." Note: The above 2 inch carb spacer adds a little more then 10 HP, over a non spacer engine. It adds more HP/ Torque then a one inch. The 2 inch is about 4 HP more over the 1" spacer. If interested I can look up the torque increase too. Last edited by aotte1; 11-01-2014 at 08:27 PM. Reason: more info |

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
Jeff,
Thanks for the complement. Worked on it some today: 1). Changed out the cab mounts, the original ones were weathered. GM still has the cushions. The bolts came out easy. Pretty easy to change out with truck partially apart. 2). Finished R/R of the brake system, pretty much everything except the master cylinder. Used SS lines from Inline Tube. Had to modify them a little but not much. 3). Also got the engine out and started installing all the clutch and related parts. It is ready for install next weekend. Les |

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
A good day today, looks more like a truck tonight. Finished putting most of the bed together today, a little more to go to finish up mounting it to truck completely. Did put it on the truck. It went back on very easy. Before doing that put the fuel tank back on, with a few changes. only using the supply line for now. Closed off the other two lines at the tank, by putting them in a loop to each other. Using the existing steel line from tank to right frame rail at back of cab. From their running new fuel line, more on that later.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
Also, installed the engine today along with the headers. Need to try and adjust the engine/trans next time I work on the truck. Number 5 tube is up against the frame and the right side headers have more clearance. So will see if I can even it out so all tubes have clearance.
Installed the engine with the trans in the truck. It took some time to get it all lined up, so that it would go back together. Still need to fix my speedometer cable leakage at the trans. Have my parts guy looking for the O ring and lip seals needed for replacement. A couple photos of the headers installed. They went in easy, had the engine lifted off the frame mounts, so that the bottom of the clam shells were just at the top of the frame mount. However, a few of the bolts took some time to install. Used a 7/16 shorty wrench on the tight ones. Kind of wish I had put some bungs for O2 sensors in them. Can do next time I have them out for any reason. Next plan to look at layout for exhaust system, may replace the trans cross member with a custom one to allow better exhaust pipe routing. Les |

Are those the elite series Hedmans? If so could you please post up a picture of where the collectors end up, would really appreciate it. Gorgeous truck by the way.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
You know I put a set of Headman Headers on my truck years ago and never had any clearance issues at all. They fit great and I could take the starter on and off without any problems. I heard all sorts of horror stories but these worked out great for me. Looking good!

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
83 SWB will get you some photos of the header exits. Will try to do it tomorrow.
Low flying, it has got me going too, finally getting some of it back together. I really want to get the engine running and have the new exhaust done- so I can hear it again. It really sounded nice on the dyno. I wish I had recorded it. Les |

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
Jeff,
Thanks for your complements, will post a few more photos of the bed once completely installed. Still need to do a final alignment check, that the bed bolt holes in the wood are correctly lined up with the frame holes. Lastly will use a fostner bit to enlarge holes in the wood to accept the metal spacer that fit between the frame and recessed washers on the surface of the wood. Will post some photos of this once done. Again, sharing all your knowledge on the bed wood replacement sure made it easier for me. Les |

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
83SWB
The photos are of the Headman Elite 1 3/4 inch headers. The top of the level is a level line from the bottom of the rear transmission (tranny is LY6). Planning to have the exhaust go above the tranny cross member. The headers exit being rotatable somewhat should help place the exhaust pipes above the cross member. Let me know if you need more photos. |

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
I plan to call my exhaust shop and confirm if 2.5" exhaust can fit above the trans rear cross member. It would need to curve up some from the header exhaust position. However, it looks like the type of exit connection these headers have allows for some outlet angle adjustment. I will measure the clearance above the cross member to the floor pan and post. Not sure if the LY6 transmission rear cross member clearance is the same as for all trans. With number you can compare to yours.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
This weekend worked on getting the engine/trans fixed back in the chassis, completing the fuel system, and installing the power steering pump. Also, looked at next steps for the week.
Fixing the engine/ trans involved installing a new rear trans mount, and checking the clearance of the headers with the frame. The headers are touching the frame on the left side. With the new trans mount installed and checking the alignment on the engine/trans, I needed to notch the frame a little. Will post photo of frame notch later. Photo of polyurethane Energy rear trans mount. |

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
The fuel system upgrades, include a new partial line from the tank to the new fuel pump. Used the existing line from the fuel tank to where it reaches close to the right frame rail. Cut the line their and installed a compress fitting to a AN 6 fitting ( the compression fitting came from the Parker Store). From the AN 6 fitting used NHRA approved fuel line to the fuel pump. Attached it to the frame using Summit clamps. I need one more AN 6, 90 degree fitting to complete install at the fuel pump. This GM high performance fuel pump is unique in that you can rotate the inlet and outlet locations to fit your application in about 15 degree increments. A few photos are attached.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
A few photos of the carb/spacer on engine, ( yes it is two inches and it makes more power over rpm range) and carb to fuel pump line. The dual feed setup on carb is from Quick Fuel. The line from it to fuel pump is fuel hard line bent to fit. Will post photo of new line bender that works great later.

Re: 1986 Chevy C10 SWB Step Side
A couple more photos, one of the new clutch reservoir to cylinder hose, it is made for brake fluid, and from an BMW application. The ID of the hose is the closest to 1/4 inch I could find, off by a couple 0.02 inches- pretty close.
The other photo is of the front of the engine, not complete but getting closer. Nest step is to work on the wiring harness to remove unused connections and clean it up, along with carb linkage hook-up. Les |

A couple of photos of the Rigid tube bender used , along with tube flare tool. They were used to make the hard fuel line from fuel pump to carb.
