rearend
I think its just the posi, acting bad around corners, seems to have alot of vibration now on hwy.Turn around time not important, have not driven for the last year. It sucks, have 308's in both axles now, wish it was 3.42's. Thanks.!

what is it doing when navigating corners?
noise, clunks, poping, grinding, vibration, is it speed related, sharpness of turn? best description possible may help in a over the computer diagnosis. sounds like you may have a bad u-joint in there also.

rear
when I go around a corner and give it power it clatters, and catches.I coast around corners now.It does vibrate at hwy speeds, unlike any other rearend.Sorry my description is bad,but when I put a new motor in and a friend from Houston came up here who races oval dirt track rode with me he knew my posi was bad and laughed about it. When I first bought it the pumpkin was full to the top, with what looked like the thickest grease.Right then I knew someone was hiding something. All I know is its not right ...so tell me what can I do?

sounds like the posi/locker has got some issues for sure. Might be the time to find the gear sets you want to run and either change the whole posi or buy what unit you want to run and get them back into shape. At least drop the cover and see if you can see any obvious damage.

I must agree sounds like it's asking for the new gears and posi you want. One thing I've learned is that vehicles tend to let you know when they want upgraded. I would also check the U-Joints, they may be causing the highway vibration (I fought the vibration battle for a while with the jeep). I did my gears myself, time was not an issue so I took my time (almost a week before i was confident it was perfect) and made sure everything was perfect. It has proven to be valuable knowlege and saved a bit of money. One word of wisdom however, measure, measure again, have someone else measure, measure one last time. Randy's Ring and Pinion install kits and guides are pretty good.
good luck Tony |

How hard is it to rebild a posi?
I'm looking at a rearend rebuild for my 12-bolt sometime this year, and i really want to get a posi, but i can't afford $300-$400 for a new one. I've seen used ones on ebay for like $50, but i bet they need to be rebuilt... So...is this something i could easily do myself? I'm trying to acquire as much knowledge on rears as i can. I'm going to get the Richmond video on rebuilding them....

there are only a few special tools required to do an ok job on installing gears, but experience, or good instructions. you will need:
a torque wrench capable of 200LBft for most rears Dial indicator with mount(magnetic or clamp) large break over bar and cheater pipe Good quality 1/2" impact sturdy and clean work area punches and 2Lb sledge Pry bars Gear marking grease/compound INlb torque wrench for setting bearing pre-loads A housing spreader is nice to have(makes the clearence a little larger for inserting carrier with shims) A 9000Lb a-symetrical lift is always nice Lots of beer (for frustration or celebration) someone thats doen it before or good instructions/video Good luck

ring & pinion
With all these folks that have replied to this post and the fact that my posi needs new clutches or I need to change everything, which one of you guys could help me with it? What do I need to buy? And more importantly, what kind of beer do I fill up my 15.5 gallon keg with? Hell sounds like a party!
Really, being serious, I would love to drive my Blazer again....
