vin number question

I read the vin decoder and understand everything but the last 6 digits...
if Im thinking right then this truck is the 19,667th truck made in 67?

vin is ce147a119667

Is that right?

Not important, just wondering.

No, not really.

It would be the 19,667th truck assigned a VIN in that sequence at that plant.

The value you are thinking of is the "manifest build number", or general assembly build sequence number, which you likely do not have access to (unless you found your build sheet in the truck).

There are a few relevant things for your to consider:

a) Each nameplate typically has its own VIN sequence. So Chevrolets are counting up roughly sequentially, as would GMCs or Cadillacs or Buicks or any other nameplate built on that same assembly line. It is likely there were significantly more than 19,667 vehicles built on that line before they got to your truck as a result of all this other "fodder".

b) Vehicles are not necessarily built in VIN sequence. So 19,668 and 669 could easily have come before 19,667.

c) Each plant has its own VIN sequence, independent from the other plants. So while yours, built in Atlanta, is incrementing up so are the VINs at Flint, Fremont, St Louis, Oshawa, Baltimore, Tarrytown and Janesville. There is no correlation between VINs at the respective plants, and the lead plants (like Flint) could be cranking out two or three times as many vehicles as a satellite plant like Atlanta.

Hope this helps your understanding -

K

Great explanation, thanks. But the vin section here states that 100001 would be the first manufactured. So if what you said is in fact correct (witch I dont doubt at all) then the vin section here explained it wrong... right? This is what it states...
Assembly Plant
A = Atlanta
B = Baltimore
F = Flint
J = Janesville
N = Norwood
P = Pontiac
S = St. Louis
T = Tarrytown
Z = Fremont
1 = Oshawa
Vehicle Serial Number
100001 = 1st Unit Built

Re: vin number question

Not sure where the problem is but in 67 all Chevrolet light trucks started at the serial number 100001.
So while you can have a rough idea of where in the sequence a specific vehicle was manuafactured from the VIN/serial number the actual sequence off the line at that plant can and did vary for a myraid of reasons. But at this point its the best reference going and the same GM used for service issues when new.
Your truck is probably one of ten 67 Chevrolet CK10-30 trucks with a serial 19,667 from ten different plants. Each has a unique VIN number due to the plant code even if everything else is the same.

But as Keith pointed out it is impossible to tell where in the sequence of all vehicles produced at the plant due to the various serials used for all models/nameplates built at a specific plant.

Re: vin number question

The VIN decoder is correct: Chevy started at 100001.

But the point is that several nameplates are being built on the same line, each building up incrementally within its own VIN sequence.

Here is a little different tack, from a different discussion:

The build sequence number absolutely increases one-for-one for every truck built. So at the beginning of the year you start with truck "01" and start counting, all the way to 700,000 or ever how many trucks were built in that plant.

The VIN sequence portion does not increment one for one....nor are trucks necessarily built in VIN order. In my day Chevy's started with 100001 and GMCs with 500001 (and then Cadillacs with 600001); so, while within a nameplate the VINs increment up one by one but because the various nameplates are jumbled in during the day's production run the VINs do not increment up exactly one for one overall.

Let's say your daily build looked like this (I'm making this up for illustration purposes):

PVI = "Primary Vehicle Identifier" - and is the way the cab/box are identified in body shop, before the GA (General Assembly/Final Line) sequence number and VIN are even created. There are two opportunities for the build order to be shuffled: coming out of body shop into paint, and coming out of paint into trim/GA.

GA sequence number is the order in which the trucks go down the final line. Once they hit trim/final the build order is locked in.

In the example shown here the operator would write the "901", "902" etc (or even just "01", "02") on the front of dash.

Does that help?

K
Also - as Tim re-iterated: this is going on at 8 different vehicle assembly plants. That means there will be 8 unique trucks with the VIN sequence portion of 119667 (and no way to tell which one came first).
