You can use either style as long as all the pulleys and brackets are the same. Just make sure the pump, pulleys, and brackets match. The long pump setup would be easier to find in a salvage yard since they were all long pumps since 1969.

Tip - a short water pump hugs close to the timing cover where a long pump will have some space between the pump and timing cover.
.
Thank you.
That helps a lot.
I've been trying to do all upgrades with the 73-87 parts.

On another note, I think it has been said that 81 was the year that the steering box and pump fittings went to metric. Previous was different and won't interchange without hose adapters. As long as you get everything from the same truck, all will be the same.

Re: 1964-66 chevy Power steering

I had a complete 72 chevy P/U setup put on my 65 Suburban in 1999. Works great, and glad I did it.The only thing I need is a new P/S pulley as mine is wobbly.

There are a couple different styles of long water pump PS pump brackets depending on whether the mounting boss below the lower bolt on the drivers side is threaded or is a smooth bore hole.

I agree ... and here are a couple of diagrams to illustrate the two styles:

The long water pump with an un-threaded boss uses brackets that look like this:
They're typically found in 1969 - 1976 Chevy cars (except Corvette) and 1973 - 1976 trucks.
Note that the "cradle" bracket that hangs off the water pump looks somewhat similar to the ones used with short water pumps but it's not the same.

The long water pump with a threaded boss uses brackets that look like this:
They're typically found in Chevy cars and trucks from 1977 up into the 80's.
Note the difference in the support bracket & spacer for A/C vs. non-A/C applications.
