shock mount
I'm rebuilding the front end on my 1/2 ton Suburban. The top of the shock rides on a stud and is held in place by a washer that is held in place by some kind of funky crimp. How do I get it off, and how do I mount the new shock?

I got some upper shock mount's from les schwab tire's here in oregon it's just a stud with a bolt on it to mount it threw the frame... If you don't find a set I may have a pair around here some where..

I have replaced the upper shock mounts on the 71 and they were held in place by a bolt and lock washer located on the inside of the frame rail... Do you have a pic of this setup so we can see what this "funky crimp" is all about and figure out how to get it out?

WOW those shock's must be guaranteed for the life of the truck LOL... Here;s a pic of my set-up I thought I had an extra set around here but I could not find em...

someone lost the nut for your mount and welded a washer to it. It should have a nut on it. You're gonna have to cut it off and then get a new set of shock mounts. I might have one but not a pair. Someone here can help I'm sure.

It's an original shock bolt that came w/the shock. Most shocks just come w/new hardware that you swap out when replacing the shocks. The newer (more recent) shocks you can buy now are threaded on both ends so you can just pull the shock off the stud & not have to worry about removing the entire stud. The older ones had threads on the frame end & that spotwelded washer on the other.

It may well be the original shock.
I have no reason to believe that the ones on the longhorn were ever chainged out (being the back ones are rusted up prety bad) These are not quite the same as yours, but also a perminant style mount. |

Most new shocks come with new upper studs in the box too. I have several sets of them from previous trucks. If you need them, just pay for shipping and I'll send them.

If you buy new shocks, new studs should be in the box with them.
