I was wondering if this an aftermarket console or if it was a p.o. mod? It seems that it had speakers mounted in it at one point so I think I might try to do the same. It also looks like it had a head unit or something in the front. I was thinking of trying to get a small sub in there if possible. Has anyone ever done this with this kind of console? The speaker in the dash isnt really cutting it.

OEM console, PO modified it.

Fugly, that's sad. Looks to me to be a factory console. The only good news is that there are reproductions of the consoles, but the tops are totally wrong. MAYBE it's possible that the bottoms match and you could repair it by replacing the bottom? No idea if they really interchange though. I just learned these consoles continued a while into the next generation (square, box, whatever 73+ were called) so maybe not as rare as I thought.

Worst case they can be rebuilt. I had an ultra-rare four-speed console that I thought was beyond repair, and the restoration shop had it totally redone. Might have been Just Dashes.

Edit: The good news is that the areas that are cut on the sides are pretty well hidden by the bucket seats, and the front is flat enough maybe you could make something to cover it?

It would be easier to put up a WTB for the bottom section. Bottom sections are much easier to find in good shape than the top. And it looks like the top is unmodified.

Thanks guys. I wouldn't have modified it like this but since its already done I'm thinking of throwing a 5.25" or 6.5" speaker in each side and maybe an 8" sub out the front or back. The truck will be a regular summer driver so I'd like to get some better sound going. It still has the gas tank in the cab so I don't have a whole lot of room to do anything custom.

Dave, like you said you would never see the sides or the back once it was mounted in the truck. I think a little piece of aluminum diamond plate to cover the front would suffice, or I could try to fill in the hole with fiberglass.
