87 2wd frame question - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

A buddy of mine has a 1987 2wd truck with a cracked frame where the steering box attaches to the frame. My question is, is the 2wd and 4wd frames the same as far as doing the repair doubler? If not, does anybody know where he can find a kit for his truck?

I have seen repair pieces for that crack but ill have to dig up the magazine i couldnt find it on the site.

Here is a good write up on how to install the patch. I think Stepahn actually did the repair and it's on Steve Fox's (Mr CK5) truck.

Thanks for the info. Problem is they all say they are for 4wd. Are the 2wd and 4wd frames the same in this area?

mine was craked, i looked at the ORD kit, but didnt have time to wait for it to get shipped..... shop i took it too, too a thick piece of metal wider and longer then the bolt pattern for the box... drilled appropriate holes and bolted it to the opposite side of the frame from the steering box. its been well over a year and has worked just fine.

I forget the name of the company, but there is a firm making braces for 2WD GM pickups of our generation...

Autofab 2WD GM frame brace-- 1973-87/91 GM's

"The above kit was designed to satisfy requests from Chevy 2WD truck owners who know 4WD owners or used to be one. They wanted some insurance for their frames as well. This kit mounts on the front side of the crossmember and reinforces 2 of the steering box mounting bolts. Fits 1/2 - 3/4 - 1 ton trucks. It's not as common a problem with 2WD trucks, but, we have had to repair them as well. For a small price and a little work you will have peace of mind.

this happened to a friend of mine and he went to his local welder and he fabbed something for him there at his shop i believe its different 2 to 4 WD
