How hard is it to convert an automatic transmission truck to manual?

I don’t yet have a C10 and was wondering if it makes any difference which type of truck I buy as a project vehicle. The reason I ask is because I see a lot more trucks with auto trannys than manuals for sale and would rather buy a manual tranny project truck if it has parts that ill need eventually anyways.

One thing that I really want is a factory tilt column and I don’t know if this was ever offered with a manual or I would ever find one. What I don’t want is a factory tilt column with old the auto shift linkage and parts hanging off of it. I want it to look right.

From the research I have done the tranny I would like to run is the NV4500 along with a 450hp SBC and an NP205 transfer case. Yes forgot to mention this will be a 4x4 build. Now when it comes to hydraulic clutches or not and all the other things that come in to play that is beyond my scope of knowledge and one of the reasons I plan on having shop that knows what they are doing build the thing.

So basically what I'm wondering is should I start off with a manual trans truck if that is what I want the finished product to have? Or does it make much difference either way?

you might want to look in late 70's vans or motorhomes for that column.My boss has a tilt column out of a motorhome and its correct.Has the small tube.(im trying to score it)

As for buying a truck thats set up for a standard or automatic.
I dont think it will make a difference really if your havng a shop build you a custom.
but maybe ask the shop what they would prefer?maybe they can give you a little better price if you make there job easier.

Are you planning on selling the parts that arent used?You might be able to get more for an auto setup.

Also,alot of these trucks already have the 350 np 205 combo your looking for.If i really wanted a 4x4(which i do,im building one) i think it would be better/faster to start out with somthing that you want rather then buying a 2 wd auto and trying to convert everything.

Really, the swap is pretty simple. Since you have no knowledge of it, that's where the difficulty comes in. These trucks are easy to swap in the clutch and brake pedal assembly. As for your tilt column, I'm assuming you want the shifter on the floor? Your best bet is an aftermarket column like flaming river or ididit. Once you actually get a truck, and you're ready to trans swap, details can come into play. For your purposes now.... yes it's possible, and no you shouldn't be frightened by an auto truck.

Four speed tilts were offered from the factory. An original thats been rebuilt will run 500+-. Ididit also makes aftermarket columns that'll work. If someone is going to build you a stellar truck, shouldn't matter what you start with other than being a 4wd.
