What is with this paint style

I have seen a few trucks painted like this before. This isn't the conventional two tone paint job that I think of when I talking about these trucks. Is it for something special or just an odd RPO code.

Re: What is with this paint style

I believe that was a special paint scheme offered in 1985 only. I have had a few, and seen several. That are always '85's.

Re: What is with this paint style

RPO ZY6.

What's unusual about that scheme (...besides the way it looks...) is that it was created by a couple hot rodder mechanics at the Milford Proving Ground.

They showed it to the Design Studio and the studio folks liked it, so it got released for production.

That's very uncommon, as usually the Design guys frown on anything that doesn't come from their own respective art house.

Re: What is with this paint style

I know I have an '85 brochure book that shows it, but I sure can't find it

Re: What is with this paint style

In Canada there's a paint job similar to that that I've only ever seen on 1986 "Wrangler" trucks. I don't think its quite the same as what you posted, but very similar.
The picture is just from Google

Re: What is with this paint style

I kinda like that look. I've only ever seen black and silver, but I suppose it was an option for any of the two tone colors.

Re: What is with this paint style

i had a 79 i was going to do that way. it was one weekend away from color when a guy in a brand new ford turned left in front of me. i hit him at 50 mph. peeled my new aftermarket fenders apart like a banana.
it was going to be code 72 bright red and car code 79 maroon.

Re: What is with this paint style

Correct; 1985 only.

Also - was not available on dually, as shown in the upper LH photo. Somebody made that one. Dually two tone was RPO ZY9.

Re: What is with this paint style

Wow, everyday I learn something. That is a really really cool two tone style.

I don't suppose they did anything like that for the 85 stepsides, did they? I think it would be doable, since no actual trim separator is required.
