Fresh air vent rebuild....

My fresh air vents were in bad shape so I picked up a good used pair here on the parts board. I removed the rust via an electrolysis bath. I then drilled out the rivets and split them apart. They're now in primer. My question is when I get them painted and put them back together with new seals, what kind of rivets should I use? It seems the blind rivets like from the factory would be a pain to do. Steel pop rivets would probably bend the metal. So I'm thinking aluminum pop rivets and then fill the holes from the back with something. I don't know what the best solution is. Pic just for the heck of it...

I did mine recently and just used some small buttonhead screws.

Re: Fresh air vent rebuild....

I used aluminum rivits on mine, I think they were 1/4" by I think 3/16" dia. Put the head on the front side. Bought a couple feet of 12" wide rubber sheet from the hardware store and used what was left of my old seals as a template to cut new ones, cost about $3 for both sides.

Re: Fresh air vent rebuild....

Thanks guys. I was just going to buy the seals since they're only $4 from classicparts.com. I think I'll just go with aluminum rivets then.

Re: Fresh air vent rebuild....

Probably a silly question but, how do you access the fresh air vents to remove them? I need to remove mine and paint them too.

No...the seals are sandwiched between the 2 steel halves. The seals are actually one large piece, not just a seal on the perimeter of the vents.

Just disconect the lever, open them and lift up, pulling the bottom pin out. They're spring loaded, you just push up and you'll feel the spring tension. They should come out easy.

Re: Fresh air vent rebuild....

AirSpeed: Thanks for the info! Sounds easy enough. I didn't know they were spring loaded. I may pull them this weekend and paint them.

Re: Fresh air vent rebuild....

My new seals came today. I like how the instruction sheet they give you is completely wrong LOL.

Re: Fresh air vent rebuild....

Got the same instructions with mine - not possible, they sound like the instruction for 73 - 84? where the seals did go around the perimeter of the vents. I laughed when I read them. Got like like the aftermarket stuff - keeps you on your toes!

Re: Fresh air vent rebuild....

Overall I'm very happy with how they turned out. It's always nice to refurbish old parts.
