Gunk in exhaust port. Solution
I was removing my intake manifold to replace the gasket and saw the below in the back two exhaust ports. I assume this was coolant. What's the best way to clean this out - along with the whole area - before replacing the gasket and putting the manifold back on. I have no idea how long its been like this as I've had the truck less than a year.

That's not an exhaust port, it's a coolant port. Clean it out with a screwdriver blade, suck the crap up with a vacuum cleaner as you do it.
Put some balled up paper towel in each of the other ports and some in the lifter valley to catch any other debris when you clean the intake surfaces. |

Yikes.
You'll want to remove the plugs in the block to drain the coolant in the block. Chances are you'll need to use a screwdriver to open the hole there as well. Once the intake is back on you may want to flush the block w/ the block plugs out, and then use a radiator flush once they're back in. |

Water doesn't pass through the intake on the rear holes. Thats common for crud buildup there. as others say, clean it up and you're good to go.

I like the idea to use a shop vac while poking that stuff, and a big towel folded up in the valley to catch all the crud. Let me know if you want me to get carried away LOL. |
