I want you guys opinion

I bought a 71 cheyenne super from a member, its an all original big block truck the original alternator is even still on their I drove it home which was over a two hour drive. I plan on restoring the truck which it needs a frame off restoration the truck is medium red code 514 all over my question is idk which way I want to go with paint I was thinking about doing the two tone with med. red and white and I was also thinking about painting it all black or since should I go back all original since everything is matching numbers? Also it's a swb with leaf springs I know some are gonna say do what I want it's my truck but I value your opinions so I would like to hear your responses

Re: I want you guys opinion

It's your truck do what you want with it "Numbers matching" really means nothing on these trucks since it can't be proven.

IMO its a needle in a haystack. I would keep it all original. The red and white is a very nice color. Congrats on a great find.

Re: I want you guys opinion

Numbers matching means nothing with these old trucks. It only really counts with Corvettes and some Camaro and Chevelles. There was no specialty engine options for these rigs. There were some pretty nice interior and exterior options for these trucks. But they were still pretty utilitarian compared to todays trucks.

If you're truly "restoring" the truck. Then the original paint code would be my opinion. But if you're going outside the box. Two tone was always one of my favorites with these rigs.

I know it's splitting hairs, but change the color and it will become a restomod. I agree with the numbers matching comments. Restoration would be stock through and through, though most use the term interchangeably for a vehicle that has been brought back from old to new condition.

Re: I want you guys opinion

If all your thinking is changing the color around a little, not a bunch of mods, i would say hit it with the 2 tone or black if thats what your craving. Do the red on the interior, then the 2tone Or black, i think would make it pop. All reversible for you or another owner at a later time. My vote, black on red.
Of coarse will look spectacular factory done and would be fine example of an original.

I agree with Leon. We need pictures!! Also, I agree go red/white or black if you want. A stock appearing paint job isn't going to detract

Re: I want you guys opinion

Unless you are planning on restoring it to sell and therefore are worried about how to get the most in resale value I say go with what you want. Paint can be re painted and drum brakes can get bolted back on. If you were going to cut the frame up and put an LS motor in it than I would advise against it on such a rare and desirable truck. I also have a factory short bed fleetside big block truck. Mine was originally red with bench seat and red interior. Since I am not worried about resale value I am going with bucket seats and parchment interior. All of which can go back if needed.

Re: I want you guys opinion

I agree 100% with what was said above, especially if you are dropping it, etc. Search thru and find a pic of the paint you like and go with that, the two tone dark red and white is one of my favs. I,ve just started a 70 Sierra Grande project, I,ll be changing it to a 4 wheel drive with an overdrive manual, fuel injection and some two tone, making it the truck it should have been.

Re: I want you guys opinion

I repainted my 69 Short Fleetside to a Blue/White/Blue/White 2 tone from a plain Blue except for cab top. As long as it has upper and lower trim and you want to stay with the red, I say go for the 2 tone. It really makes these trucks look good.

i have owned 4 all black vehicles it is a nice color but the two tone just stands out more on these trucks IMO.

Re: I want you guys opinion

If restoring the paint is the look your goin for, I think it would look cool. And the next guy might think its cool too, or he might not give a care.
You said it needed a frame off, so are you goin to use factory spec chassis paint, save every rivit, factory bolts, etc.,etc.
Point is, if your restoring it for yourself then take it back all the way to 71. Either way, factory or restomod, its gonna be cool. Make it yours, and as long as your happy, doesnt matter what anybody else thinks.
Do what I do, tell them you didnt build it for them.
Oh, and as far as black goes... f... that. My sonoma is black and im sick of tryin to keep it clean.

Haha. Black is not for everyone for sure. But it sure is pretty. The 3 I've had I enjoyed keeping them clean. My guess it's not going to be driven daily..

Re: I want you guys opinion

In the end it all depends on if you want a stock, "original" truck.

A "correct" truck, as it could have been ordered in the final configuration.

Or a restomod, basically a free for all.

Lowering could be a free choice on an otherwise "stock" truck and still look good within reason.

My vote is for the Solid Red and Parchment/White interior (bench or buckets).

While the White of the "optional" Deluxe Two-Tone is attractive, IMHO its way overdone being added to nearly everything.

The original trim options were limited on Cheyenne Supers with cloth houndstooth bench seats. Parchment/White, Blue or Olive.

If a Super was ordered with bucket seats then they were all vinyl (houndstooth inserts were never offered from the factory on buckets). Again in Parchment/White, Blue or Olive. Plus Black or Saddle not otherwise available in a Super.

So, if you wanted a Black truck then any of the above trim colors would be "correct" depending on the seat style used. Black/Blue, Black/Olive, Black/Black and Black/Parchment are all favorites of mine.

As far as red interior that was not offered on a 71-72 Super. nor were the Black houndstooth interiors "factory".
