Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait

hahahah well put, I always tell my girl. You buy things that are either one and dones or loose value quick. Things I buy are justified by, the 60 plus years of greatness that needs brought back to life. One day its all gonna become rare and thus driving up the price. Oh and you can't get the ol hags back on the road without tools.....so there yah go all my expenditures justified as they are "investments"

It really does and he has the skill to use them. I've been fortunate to meet a number of talented metal shapers over the years.

Fifteen years ago neighbors gave it to me and I put it in the back of the shop.

So the young guy stopped by last night and asked if I would sell it to him. We are always glad to help a young person who has an interest in old vehicles and besides it had belonged to his Gran'pa. We said "Sure". "How much?" "You can have it for what we paid for it."

Thought he was going to cry. He stopped by with a buddy today and they drug it out of the shop.
Just some back story from last July for some perspective. The young man wasn't able to tow the vehicle home that day and left to be back next week. He stopped by sometime in October and said he would be back right after harvest.

He and a buddy finally showed up today with a tractor...nope, truck still won't tow well because of the flat tires. They struggled with it for awhile and I went out to help them. So I loaned them my trailer, hitch and tie downs. After loading he asked what the truck is worth...hmmm maybe $500..why I wondered. Oh, he was just planning on selling it since he didn't think he could fix it up. I offered to buy the front bumper and guards...

I will still try to help others when I can...hope he brings back the trailer!

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait

Yeah kind of a bummer...then my wife pointed out he could probably really use the money for something he needs more. I too hope it doesn't get scrapped.

Anyway, worked on setting in the engine and transmission yesterday. Short day as the Grandson's came over for pizza and we played all afternoon. Best day we've had in weeks!

I had six LS mounting plates I previously made so selected two of them to use. Also had two of the SBC "A" shaped mounts that join to the frame. Figured I would slide the engine in place, locate the "A" mounts to the plate while the frame mount end was in place on the frame.

Nope, the base of the "A" mount landed right on the front chamfered in bolts...couldn't have been more precise if I wanted them there.

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait

Having the base of the "A" mount right on top of the engine mount bolts won't work because the support tubes extend through the base and are welded on both sides. I didn't want to compromise the strength by grinding the tubes flush.

Relieved the LS plate for clearance on the tubes and tacked the "A" mounts in place on the plates. After verifying positioning I will weld the "A" mounts on permanently.

Next up I plan to position the power train back in place and make a pattern for the frame mounts. Looks like it will be an inch or two behind the current ones shown above.

Thanks for stopping by!

Don't you just love doing this stuff. Nice job on the mounts.

Yeah you lose a little time on the truck but if you miss an opportunity to be with the kids that can't be made up. I like the pizza part.

AD, I think that 56 Chevy in the background belonged to my grand father, Can I borrow your trailer and truck to bring it home, LOL.

I think I would have been pi$$ed when he told me he wanted to sell it after you were nice enough to give it to him for nothing.

Thank you 99...I really wanted to see if I could fab them with what I had in the shop. I probably should have just bought the truck back. He did bring the trailer and tie downs back that night.

Sure Russell, come on up! Actually I was only mildly aggravated. He is a nice kid and maybe just a bit challenged. He and a buddy were trying so hard to move the truck with his tractor and were getting no where fast.

I tend to be generous and sometimes (though rarely) it doesn't work out.

Re: 48 Burb, bagged, 5.3, 20 year wait

Different subject on LS in an AD truck...accessory drive.

Came across this http://trackmasterproducts.myshopify...y-drive-system

Width from low mount AC compressor outside to alternator outside is 21 inches. Frame is about 22 inches.

Has anyone seen one or used the system?

Just researching possibilities...and need to look at what Iceburgh used on his again.

AD;

It is always good to help people when ever we can.
I too enjoy family time when I can.
I have a sister that I'm close too.
We try to spend Sundays together when we can.
Now that NASCAR i on we try to watch the races together.

I'm still working on the front grill, want to add the btm two bars also.
Need to work on the radiator mounts n make a box to set the elect fan in to cool the radiator.
Will have to wait till I get the radiator back from the welding shop, had to have the lower outlet cut off n moved stright out.

Have NO pic this time.

AD I used this system along with a Vintage Air Gen II system.
All in it was $2k....but it was the only thing I could find that would fit inside the Mustang II frame rails and not have to cut into the inner fenders.
I wanted it small and clean....bottom page of link
http://www.rainbowproductsonline.com...w-products.php

Cant recall the company that makes it but I can check my receipts when I get to work on Mon

found it

this is just the drive unit...not the cab unit. Vintage air IMO is the only way to go

Tim, Mark, Bow Tie and 98, thanks for the props! Bow tie and 98, watching you guys work on your 72 and 70 Burbs is making me want one bad...I gotta stop!

Iceburgh, thank you for the links! I remember the link for the accessory drive and hadn't seen the fan. I need to go back and look at your engine positioning to firewall too. Anyway I don't plan to cut my inner fenders either.

Hope to make a little progress tomorrow...with the weather moving in the shop will be a good place to be.
