Re: Looking At A '66

This would have been the first fender flapper I bought. I have always gone for body condition over all else. I don't care if it has no motor & trans or if I have to bring my own wheels and steering wheel to guide it onto a trailer. But I saw this as a cool & casual DILLIGAF truck to make purr, with minimal timeless must have coolness added...wide rear wheels, dual exhaust, 4-on-the-floor, chrome cup tach on the dash, and maybe some other steering wheel (like metalflake blue or '60s car w/horn ring). It already has a while roll 'n' pleat seat! Make it look like it was like that for 40 years. I hear it now in my original unrestored '72 4wd... "You wanna sell that? If I had it I'd restore it and it would never see another day of work in it's life". That's when I say, "Hmmm, never thought about that". I built show trucks in the 80s-90s, been there done that. I see a truck I would never turn a body or bumper fastener on. Waaay too much moolah. Sorry truck, I tried to help you

Re: Looking At A '66

I find tons of potential trucks that I would love to save but....They are all priced like this one Special-K found, similar condition too. It seems that if someone thought about turning a wrench on them, this doubles the price. I went and looked at one that I didnt know the price at first, short step, no motor or trans and no wood in the bed, been sitting a long time also. I roll up and get out, ol boy comes up and says " Ill take $3500 today!"

I got back in my 65 and left.

Re: Looking At A '66

If it's one I really have to have, but they are way off with their asking price, I have a standard line. "It's your truck and I'm not going to tell you how to sell it, but I know a good bit about these trucks and what they're worth. I like it and I would be buying this truck right now if it was priced in the right range. I'm not saying there isn't someone out there who doesn't know better, and I hope you find him. But, in case you don't, I'd like to leave you my number to call when you're ready to take $X,XXX.xx for it", hand him my number and say something like, "Hopefully you won't be needing that number, right?", as I give the agree? head nod and smile. It should always be a friendly thing or what the heck ya doin' this for? You might be thinking different, but who cares what he is as long as you get your truck.

Re: Looking At A '66

It's funny. If the guy looked out his window he would have seen me pull up, look it over, and call. He would have seen me come back the next day in the same vehicle, take a second look, and take pictures. Yet, no call back on a truck that sat for sale since last fall (so far). This truck sits where thousands of people have passed by and you'd think he would be happy to see some interest. I figure at this point he must be thinking "What's the use of calling back?". He probably had so many calls that lasted long enough to get a "You want how much??" that he figures everyone in the county must know the deal and all I'll want to do is cut his price in half or less. He is right about that and it would be all but some rare fool...who might offer as much as $4k. But I have too much faith in humanity to fathom anyone dumb enough to give $6,500.

I looked at a project on Sunday. A '68 SWB, frame/suspension/steering/brakes all done. 6cyl/3spd, bare cab (not real shabby) on frame, running & driving with title. It has 5-lug, disc front, drop spindles, and 5" rear coils. Not a bad price, either, considering it comes with a ready to go cab. Hmmm... Maybe I'll talk to my buddy with the '60 C40 and.........hmmmmm

Re: Looking At A '66

And not one, but TWO original hubcaps!

I really want this truck and have devised an ingenious plan to make it happen at a very reasonable price. I have a buddy (Dale) with a towing company in town. I'll have him sitting near by with his wheel lift rig waiting for my signal. The plan is to arrange to meet the guy, offer him his next rock, sign title over, hand him the rock, call Dale, and get that thing out of there quick!

Re: Looking At A '66

Logan paid $200 for his but we are in Texas...

Didn't hurt that it looked like this when we found it. I can see potential in almost everything, don't think the owner saw any...lol...15 years in this field. A battery, fresh gas and some tires and he drove it the next day...

Re: Looking At A '66

Not too shabby!

I know where there's one sitting with trees grown up through the bed. It has been there 30 years or more. I've been meaning to get a picture for years. I also know where there is a 66 or 67 GTO that was parked over 40 years ago (during Vietnam war) when it was a cherry golden beauty. Most of the paint is gone and it must be totally shot by now. In the last year or so, the barn on the farm came down and that GTO has outlasted it. The farmer may have passed on by now. The rumor is it was the farmer's son's car and he died in Vietnam. I never considered asking about it or even asking to take a picture, out of respect to his emotions. I am sure there is a reason that car was left right where the son left it

Re: Looking At A '66

I was going to be driving by where that truck I described above was sitting on Monday. I decided I was finally going to stop and get a picture. The reason I never have is there is nowhere to pull over and I didn't want to pull into their driveway. I had my camera ready, turned on, and prepared to do a quick pull halfway off the road snap shot, and it was gone! That thing sat there at least 30 years that I know of. I would say it was hauled off to the scrap yard, but these days it might end up in Gas Monkey Garage for all I know.
