Hood Insulation Ideas? What Do You Use??

I would like to install some hood insulation

The aftermarket suppliers prices I've seen are pretty outrageous -- like $175 plus oversize shipping

What are you guys using for underhood insulation?

Thanks!!

Is that duct insulation? I think it's called Frost King?

If so... I've used it on the inside of the cab instead of Dynomat

I have to ask...what is the advantage to insulating the underside of the hood? I can appreciate cab insulation, but would like to learn the benefit of doing the underside of the hood.

Lou, If you don't mind telling me where did you get the Chevrolet radiator support covers?

They look great.

Question Re: Hood Insulation Ideas? What Do You Use??

BruthaMan,
I've never figured out why you want to hold the heat under the hood either. I have always wanted the heat to get out instead of keeping it in.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Hood Insulation Ideas? What Do You Use??

The insulation can help the engine warm up faster, acts as a fire suppressant if it falls down (on newer cars, not sure about these), and muffles engine noise.

On the other hand it also decreases engine cooling.

Re: Hood Insulation Ideas? What Do You Use??

Some cars have insulation to absorb the noise. Maybe keeping the paint cool will help it look good for a longer period of time?

My stock 69 doesn't have any insulation under the hood. It's a base model.

I happen to like the sound of the engine, so I have no plans to put any sort of insulation under the hood.

It looks custom when you raise the hood. I'll admit that I added insulation under mine, but its mostly to lower the heat on my fiberglass hood.

Re: Hood Insulation Ideas? What Do You Use??

I see no point, other than protect fiberglass. The sun is the only heat that is hard on hood paint. never had a problem getting an engine to warm up on it's own. The heat comes from within that warms the mass. That's what a thermostat is for. The insulation would only hold heat in that had been created by the engine you wanted to warm up. The ambient temp is created by the object you want to warm up? The ambient temp is created by the warmed up engine. I don't see insulation making the engine too hot, though. The only issue I'd be concerned about is condensation created between hood and insulation being trapped

Jim, that's good old LMC. Part # 38-7819 I believe. Its a good product and has held up well. I know LMC gets a bad rap sometimes, but this part has worked nicely.

Yup... just the little rubber vibration isolators between the hood skin and the braces. No need for anything else.
