1966 GMC with TH400 auto

I believe you could order the TH400 auto transmission behind a big GMC v6 in 1966 only. I don't think I've ever seen this combo in a real truck. Does anyone have one? Or photos? Just curious about its popularity. Wonder how well suited the two were to one another. Anyone have experience with it?

Re: 1966 GMC with TH400 auto

Was one that popped up on her last year. I believe it was up in Nebraska....had the TH400 and it was a 66. What brought all the attention was the factory 3 speed auto column.

Found the link: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=577214

Ive got a 283 with a TH400 out of a 71 Monte Carlo. It's a custom job, but it's possible.

No, I'm looking for a V6 GMC backed with a TH400 from the GMC factory.

From what I can see of the column it looks like it might be a 3 speed auto. Description doesn't specify.

It does not specify but under the hood if you look real close you can see a kickdown switch.

It appears the TH 400 was a 3/4 ton only thing ( GMC 1500=Chevy 20) in 1966, and it was available with all engines. A $242 option back in '66, wow, what is that in today's dollars?

This one still makes me cry. A truck you don't find everyday. Highly optioned low mileage original paint 3/4 ton survivor truck gets the knife and repaint. Here's the write up towards bottom of page. http://www.oldchevytrucks.com/blog/i...eaturedtrucks/

Re: 1966 GMC with TH400 auto

This past summer I had the opportunity to buy a '66 GMC 3/4 ton that was equipped with the original TH400, Dana 60 differential. The V6 had been replaced with a 305 SBC. This truck also did not have the vulcanized rubber rear cab mounts. It had what you would typically find on a 1/2 ton. I had to pass on the truck and it was sold to a guy from Colville Washington.

I know Ed though, and he is one of the nicest and most knowledgeable guys you'll meet. At the time he probably just didn't know what he had. But in my opinion...he did a nice restoration. He coulda done worse and thrown a 350 in there and slammed the thing. I like that link though....I got stuck on a couple Chevys posted there! lol

That '62 4x4 (the first one on the list) is just pure awesomeness.

For an automatic behind a GMC V-6? Actually they used a Chevy pattern Powerglide or Turbo 400, there was a 2 peice adapter that mated to the V-6 block and had the Chevy bellhousing bolt pattern on the back side. It was used with an iron flywheel and a separate flexplate. The flywheel had an extended hub that brought the flexplate back to meet the torque converter. Good thing about those adapters is that they allow you to use a 700R4/4L60 or 4L80 behind a V-6 if you want to.

Were the support rods used on the '67 and '68 trucks? I don't remember seeing them.

Re: 1966 GMC with TH400 auto

Interesting, sounds like the rods were a 'fix'. Possible there was a bulletin instructing dealers to install the rods if customers complained. That could explain why they are not on every truck.

Re: 1966 GMC with TH400 auto

I have this 66 3/4 ton. 351, auto, custom cab, big glass, power steering and power brakes. It’s not a runner. I was going to steal the auto out of it for another truck but can’t make myself take it apart. Rare bird.
