gas gauge issues 2000 gmc

when i turn the key on gas gauge jumps way past full, like almost 360 degrees, but registers normal when started. at idle you can see it flutters. im thinkin sending unit? hate to drop tank if its in the cluster

What body style? Both GMT-400 & GMT-800 where produced in 2000.

Truck Platforms....

GMT-400 '88-'00
GMT-800 '99-'07
GMT-900 '07-'13
GMT-K2xx '14 to present

Both 400 & 800 platforms used the same gauge "layout" in 2000.

Its probably the fuel sender, But the diagnostic strategy is different between the 2 platforms.

if it's the Silverado/Sierra series you most likely have a bad stepper motor in the cluster. The other gauges will fail soon. Replace cluster
