Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

Sorry but no I have not had the time yet. I'm still working 80 hrs a week every week. I keep hoping for a break.

I have sold several of these plates to '60-'62 owners that have done the extra work involved to make them work. There is a thread where one member detailed what he did on his '62 C20. I will have to see if I can find the thread.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

I found and purchased a Saginaw steering box 7802644 from a 1980-85 full size GM pickup I believe. Also I have made the steering (pitman) arm the same length as the original steering arm (cut and weld) to work with the original steering gear (64 C10) geometry. Did I mess up? Or should I have just kept the original pitman arm length?

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

There is absolutely no reason to shorten the pitman arm for the power steering box. A pitman arm is a critical component. If it fails, people could die.

Okay. So I use the power steering pitman arm? The one that came on the power steering box?

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

Yes, you must use the pitman arm that is designed for the steering box you chose.

Looking to buy a bracket from you. I have a 66 c10 and got a 77 power steering box with all the steering linkage. I assume I just need the bracket only?

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

If you are using the original steering column, you might find the tube and flange useful if you don't have a drill press and a welder.

I actually am going to use a different column. Either a aftermarket one or if I can find one to use. I kept the flanged tube piece. I have a welder.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

I am installing a tilt column. I dont know what year it is yet but I will find out. The engine is a 350 out of a '70 Camaro with power steering. Can I use the gear box and pitman arm from the Camaro or do I need to use truck parts? Will your plate work if I do use the Camaro parts? Thank you

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

No you can not use a car steering box on a truck. The Camaro box mounts on the inside of the frame and a truck needs a box on the outside.

You must use a '68-'86 C series or '87-'91 R series steering box. Since you are using a 1970 power steering pump, you will want a '68-79 C series steering box and pitman arm

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

Interesting bit of info here. How do you tell the boxes apart? What's the difference in pumps? Is there an advantage over either the C or R series?

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

If you are referring to a car steering box versus a truck steering box, once you look at them you will see what side of the frame they mount on. Of course the '88 + truck steering boxes mount on the inside of the frame as the earlier care do.

The '68-'79 C (and K) series steering boxes have SAE style hose fittings. The '80-'86 C (and K) series and '87-'91 R (and V) series steering boxes have Metric with an O-ring style hose fittings. I have never paid attention if the casting number of the boxes are any different. There was also an option of a variable ration steering box. But I do not know how to ID those aside from pulling one from a truck that has that option listed on the SPID

With the pumps, aside from the early versus late reservoir, I do not know of any way to ID any internal differences. I do know that sometimes when you buy a rebuilt pump, it may put out more pressure than one out of another box. I think that may just be a difference on who and how they installed the pressure relief spring in the pressure port.

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

received my package last Friday as promised, everything was packaged great and instructions are nice and clear I installed the steering box today and it worked great the only thing i did noticed was that in my frame 2 of the holes were next to existing holes and I ended up with 2 elongated holes will this be an issue?

Re: Power Steering Adapter Plates

You should have had only 1 elongated hole, but you should be fine as long as you used the supplied washers and torqued the bolts to 65-70ftlbs.
