Things that make you go HMMMMM....

I love my truck. I searched for a good year / year and a half before I bought this one. I have changed my mind several times on the direction I want to go with it and am probably not done changing it still.

However, I do not like the dash / instrument panel. I am a big guy, 6'-4" and when I am driving, it is very hard to see the gauges. With the recess that they have back into the panel, all I see is the needle, no numbers.

I love all things "techie". Smart phones, smart TV's, Bluetooth, all that stuff. I like the idea of a digital dash, run off a tablet or something similar. I am thinking something like changing the instrument panel for the glove box door (I think this has been done before, with actual gauges) and doing something like a recessed license plate type of thing that would a tablet would fit into and connect to the electronics of the truck.

Has anyone done this with the stock, non-LSx / OBDII port setup? Any ideas on how / what it would take to do this?

There really aren't any stock "electronics" on these trucks. You would need to figure out some type of analog-to-digital convertor to make that work. You could use a GPS speedometer, but oil pressure is mechanical, and fuel and temperature are just resistance values.

Re: Things that make you go HMMMMM....

If you've got a modern engine with a OBDII plug on it, you can get a cheap bluetooth plugin on amazon, and use an android tablet with the "Torque" app. Customizable gauges. And you could run a second android device, like an old phone, with a gps speedometer app.

I plug in the bluetooth device whenever we're on a trip in one of our cars just to be able to keep a check on things with my phone, and reset a code if I need to.

I looked at the Intellitronix website and that seems pretty interesting. I like that you can buy just the individual pieces and configure them how you like. That might be an option.

To bad they don't have a "heads up" display you can purchase. One like they have in military A/C and new sports cars. That way you could drive and not be looking at a tablet or other device.

I am like the anti-tech! The more complicated it is, the more likely it breaks and when it does, the less likely the average Joe can fix it.

My little rant over, keep us updated on your progress. A lot of guys want to bring their iphones and tables along. Pics are a must!

I don't even have a cigarette lighter in my truck: I can't charge anything.

When my dashboard lights go out intermittently, I use a gps based HUD I have on my iPhone. It is reversed so you just set it on your dashboard and it displays correctly on the windshield.

A low budget approach would be to lower your seat!
