Muncie 4 speed

So will this work? More like.. what will it take to make this work
it's a 68? Corvette model. I'll need a bell housing, clutch, shifter and mechanical linkage.
My truck was a 3 speed. I don't have a drive shaft so I'll probably get one made ? Also I'll be changing it from a column shifter to a floor shifter.
Can I still use my z bar?
Will my crossmember be ok or will I have to modify it? I'm doing a 5" or so drop up front, which will eventually be bagged. And im doing a small c notch and bagging the rear so I'm wondering if I'll have to do some adjustment to the crossmember anyways.

Your z bar and bell should be fine. Clutch should work also as long as the 3 and4 speed have the same no of splines on front shaft. I have done several swaps like this and only changed trans and shifter. Depends on which 3 speed it is. Cross member should work as well as long as they are the trans are same length.

Re: Muncie 4 speed

as of now you should probably be able to pull the 3 speed and put the 4 speed in its place, 60-66 the trans hangs off the bell housing, so the cross member supports the bell housing, not the trans. there is a good chance that the 3 speed and car 4 speed are the same length and have the same input and output splines.

the shifter might be farther back, and require a bench seat 4 speed style.

Re: Muncie 4 speed

I put a Muncie M21 in my '63 about 38 years ago. There are several other members here that have Muncies or BW T10's in their trucks.

The Muncie M20,21 or 22 will bolt right up to your original bellhousing. I do not know if the 3 speed clutch will work or not. You probably should go with a new clutch anyway. Changing the trans has nothing to do with the clutch linkage. The original linkage will still work just fine. As for the shifter a typical Hurst shifter will work, but with a bench seat, some guys have found that a '55-6-7 shift lever will clear the seat.

Of course if you feel inclined to, you can also remove the original bellhousing and it's crossmember. And then go with a typical car bellhousing and add a trans crossmember.

Re: Muncie 4 speed

I had a Muncie in my truck when I did the original resto on it back in 1988. Like has been said, should bolt up with no issues other than maybe drive shaft length.

I pin on running a 621 bellhousing.

Re: Muncie 4 speed

Then you will have to remove the original bellhousing crossmember and install a trans crossmember at the rear of the trans. An auto trans crossmember from a '63-'86 C series or '87-'91 R series will work.
