Front winch factory option

I recently bought a 68 4x4 4 speed short bed step side.It was a government order. The option sheet on the glove box door list the winch...And the winch was still on the truck. It's appears to be made by a fabrication shop.
You think the winch was sent to the dealer for installation?
I've decided not to put the winch back on the truck..

Re: Front winch factory option

Yes it was a factory installed fleet option winch. That truck and question has been posted here by member Cooper Restorations.
Having trouble understanding why someone would buy a rare factory optioned winch truck just to remove the winch. Most of these were worked to death or stripped down and modified over the years.

Re: Front winch factory option

Is it a 4 speed with the PTO mated to the right side of the trans ? I know ford and dodge used a similar set up for the pto used on Wreckers and dump beds .

Yeah, cool truck. I saw it advertised for sale on here, and then followed the auction on Ebay, but it appeared to have significant amounts of rust and rot - at least, too much for me.

Why leave off the winch?? because it's my truck and not yours The winch bumper was mounted worse than you can imagine.1/4 inch plates were bolted and welded to the frame and the winch /bumper mounted to that with more welds and bolts. And the welding and fabricated mounting plates were very poor workmanship.
I like the truck and Cooper was honest to me with the description. The truck is original . Right now I'm going over all the mechanical stuff. The cosmetics will be left as is except for safety items..It will then be put back to work on my property and for fetching chicken feed in town. When not being used it'll be in my heated shop and won't be driven when deicing chemicals are on the road.

Grumpy, the PTO was mounted on the left side most likely because of the right side front differential. The PTO drive shaft fouled the exhaust pipe even though some hack many years ago tried to bend the pipe out of the way.

I know Ramsey winches were offered as an RPO, is that what this one is? The government got whatever they wanted, so could be anything

Re: Front winch factory option

Jeff, the truck is coming along nicely. It's an old thing so it needs some attention to make it reliable for daily use.

The PTO is a Chelsea/Dana , the winch is a Koenig King Winch. It is a sound functional unit that could easily be be made to look new.

Re: Front winch factory option

I love the truck. My truck is a 1972 swb stepside with spare tire cutout but only a 2wd.

I hope you get her fixed up to your liking.

Not so much, it's localized to the lower cab corners and the where the weather strip was on the top of the rocker panel. The rest is quite solid and I would rater see the rust that it be hidden by suspect sheet metal repairs.

For those interested in factory winches here's a few more photos..My cheap camera distorts the image, the winch isn't bet of of shape. Anyone have a similar winch?
