AC compressor burnt up

Well...had the AC working somewhat okay but today driving along smelled burnt plastic. I was behind a semi who just came off the highway so thought possibly his brakes? Smell got worse, slowed, saw smoke from behind, pulled over, heavy smoke from under hood, fear engine on fire, open hood, AC compressor smoking heavily, cut belt, on road again but hotter! Well not bad for a 42+ year compressor. What a morning.
