Burnt Distributor Cap Why?

Ok, So I just finished rebuilding my quadrajet the other day. I also replaced the rusty old gas tank and filter which lead to the carb rebuild. Anyways got it all back together. Started test driving and tuning the carb. Everything went great. Came back home and parked the truck. Later that night I went to fire it up and nothing. After some troubleshooting I found I had no spark. Today I pulled the cap, and the button in the center looks burnt and the rotor is discolored and little. Replaced them with a spare I had laying around. Fired right up. So I wondering what could cause this???

P.s Distributor is one of those cheap skip white hei units. About a year old.

Re: Burnt Distributor Cap Why?

That didn't happen overnight looks like corrosion just was time more fuel less full after rebuild changed and not enough spark to fire.

I don't recall off the top of my head. And I'd go check but it's raining cats and dogs out there right now.

Re: Burnt Distributor Cap Why?

I have only seen this on high mileage components. If your is only 1 year old it must have been arcing somehow or that button is some kind of chinese material. I doubt if a new one will do it so fast.

Re: Burnt Distributor Cap Why?

Installed it in April 2014 have about 9000 miles on it. And it is most likely a Chinese part.

Re: Burnt Distributor Cap Why?

Gap was 0.60 which I guess is stock for the 96-99 Vortecs. I re-gaped them to 0.45.
