Steering column rebuild

If there is already a thread for this please point me in the right direction.

To start off I don't have the steering column vocab I need. Don't know what almost any of these parts are called.

I would appreciate anyone's past experiences.

Wheres a good place to buy replacement steering colum parts?

I will eventually disassemble this thing. Not sure it will ever go back together, but it's coming apart one way or another.

Here are some problems I saw just taking a quick look.

This gives the shift arm too much slack to move around. Main reason I'm started trying to revamp the column. Goes RND just fine, but going from R to P sometimes just doesn't happen. My linkage is working fine as far as I can tell.

Sometimes it will shift into P like it's brand new. Sometimes I have to wiggle it around for 3 min trying to get it into P.

I just got mine put back together. It was a little different than yours but probably just due to a different steering wheel.

1- Yes it should just pull off. You might need to get a puller from the auto parts store. They rent them cheap or you could buy one cheap too. (I didn't have that part in my column, that's what's different between mine and yours)

2-There is a bearing that the steering rod rides on to keep it centered and turning freely. You'll see it after you get that first part off. Yours sounds like it's either fubar'ed or not there at all.

3-Turn signal switches are readily available online or at the parts stores. you shouldn't have any problems replacing the cracked one.

4- the pin is just one piece. it should be long enough to go through the column, the shifter and the column again but not long enough to come back out the bottom. If the shifter has lots of play the balled end (the end you cant see) might be worn or the pin might be too short to reach the other side of the column causing the slop in the shifter.

For the first pic yes that mount comes off. I used a puller kit from harbor freight to remove it. Once it's out of the way the turn signal switch has three screws and you have to remove the hazard button. Also it's a real pain to put the wires down through the column when you replace it. I actually pealed each one away and fished them through one by one with some string and and a coat hanger. I tried to get them through all together but just couldn't do it. I have heard the housing for the turn signal comes off but I couldn't budge it.

On mine, I had to rotate the housing counter-clockwise a few inches and then I was able to pull it off. Just make sure you have some slack in the harness to do so.

I tried to move mine but it wouldn't budge. How is the tilt arm removed? I didn't see any way to remove it with the housing on. Also is there any individual housing parts available out there? My shift indicator screw holes are stripped.

Look up CJs Rods and Machines. I found him on ebay. They have many column parts, I have bought a few items from them in the last few months.
