I must be blind ?
Some of you saw the pictures of a couple 67's I found last month . I was looking for a short frame and bought the "blue" one to use as a donor but the truck just ran to good and really just needed to be restored and after a spell on ebay and not meeting the reserve I decided to hold off on it .
The second parts truck I found to use as a frame donor came with a ton of extra parts and had a few other things I wanted on it so I brought that one home to part out and keep what I wanted . Well... I must be BLIND because I've been looking for an intact good 292/6 for a while now and have made about 15 calls to find decent one with no luck , I finally have some time to part out the truck and go out this morning ... open the hood ... and there sits the 292 I've been scouring the want ads and making phone calls looking for and it was sitting next to my barn in a parts truck already and I never noticed that it was the elusive to me 292 I've been searching for right under my nose .....Grumpy's getting old or I MUST BE BLIND http://http://http:// |

Congratulations Grumpy, you found exactly what you were looking for, the price was right, and you didn't have to go very far to get it. That never happens to me! I am happy for you.

Good deal! I have 3 running 292's I have been saving. The last one I picked up will be going in my Green '67 to replace the tired 250 that's in it now. LockDoc

Re: I must be blind ?
The "Parts Fairy" brought it to you as a reward for not cutting up the other-one, I've read your thread from the begging about these trucks, and watched the Ebay listing you had. If my finances were there, I would've bought it myself right away. But the timing just isn't right for me. I'm glad that it's not getting cut up though. And that is awesome that you found your motor that you've been searching for and I hope Your good Karma continues

Re: I must be blind ?
it's in the parts truck , you can see where the right engine mount has been moved forward for the 292 and all the hoses are off and no starter , someone pulled the 3 speed and dropped in an automatic in it's place , the "blue" truck has the 250 in it . they are both 1 visor/ no armrest low optioned trucks .The parts truck has '68 front fenders and still has the 67 vent windows and it looks like someone has already cleaned the frame once . I'm pulling it all apart today who knows what surprizes are still to be found ?
the "blue running /driving truck had a sheet of steel tack welded over the original wood floor bed and from under the truck it looks like all the original wood is still intact and shows no rot ? I'll be removing the steel today also just to check the condition of the bed wood . |

Re: I must be blind ?
Haha, nice story!
I've been wondering something for a while and since you have a 250 and a 292 you seem like the perfect person to ask grumpy. I've had both long tube headers and premade lmc exhaust for my 250. They were both for 230/250/292 engines. They also both were way too long. My theory is that the 292 is taller and needs longer pipes, is that true? Anyway, go outside and leave some cookies for whoever slipped that 292 into your truck and maybe you'll find some more good stuff tomarrow. |

Re: I must be blind ?
Count this as a win. A fail would be buying another 292 and THEN finding the one you already had.
So you spent some time researching availability. No biggy.

In short, the long tube headers are perfect for the 292 in a C/10. C/20s, K/10s and -20s have even more space, I believe. Four wheel drives require a special diagonal engine crossmember for the 292 L6. Grumpy, excellent news. I'm running the original '68 292 engine rebuilt in 2005. I also have 2 cores -- a '67 292 L6 that I built in 1977 and ran 250,000 miles thru 2002, and a green '63 292 L6 [unmolested] that I got from a barn-finder, who only picked it for the script Chevrolet valve cover that he wanted for his 250. Stay InLine my friends.

Re: I must be blind ?
A surprise 292 is good news indeed. They are harder to find all the time. Nice to see some inline love here. Great engines.

Yeah, I only open the hood every five years or so, too.

Re: I must be blind ?
Score. Gottta put that one in the win column.
Problem with getting a score like that is now you gotta take a beating on a couple of deals to get right with the truck Karma gods before you are even.
