Sandalwood Steering Wheel Paint

Has anyone ever tried to paint a steering wheel to match the Sandalwood color? If so what type of paint and color code did you use? Pics and procedure would be great. Is it correct to assume that a '72 with parchment interior got a sandalwood wheel if the dash pad and column were sandalwood?

Re: Sandalwood Steering Wheel Paint

I'd like to see the responses to this one. I have the same setup, parchment interior, sandalwood dash, column, and steering wheel. Like most others, my sandalwood steering wheel has crumbled.

I've obtained a black oem steering wheel, and am considering painting a dash pad and this wheel to get the original look back.

Re: Sandalwood Steering Wheel Paint

Lacquer or acrylic enamel would work. You will really want to scrub the grains of the steering wheel out and wipe down with wax and grease remover.

Acrylic enamel with hardener would be more durable than lacquer. I have seen good results of people on here using the single stage paints on their wheels. You will want to get the paint mixed at a paint shop. Usually you can bring in a sample of the color you want to match and get what you need. Trevor

Re: Sandalwood Steering Wheel Paint

The reproduction wheels are painted. As Trevor said, proper prep is paramount with the texture and considering the use. There are adhesion promoters like Bully Dog as well. Definitely a single stage automotive grade paint.
