Post your lumber rack pics
Finally have my '66 swb to the point where I can make it my only truck. As my only truck I'm going to have to be able to haul 10' lengths of steel on a semi-regular basis. Building a rack isn't a problem but finding a design that looks good on an old truck well that's got me a bit stuck. Any of you guys seen anything that looked really cool? I'm thinking just a front and rear "hoop" nothing over the cab like the photo below. Photo of my truck as well.

Re: Post your lumber rack pics
That first pic is the exact truck I was thinking of when I saw your thread title.
Cool truck.

Re: Post your lumber rack pics
Is that the point of the over cab rack. 10ft is still bigger than truck. There is a Y bar that slides in hitch. Or like rebar trucks hang off passenger side truck.

How bout a gutter (called eve troughs in some parts of the country) rack.
I cobbled these together to transport 25' gutters for my new addition.

Re: Post your lumber rack pics
I have a full rack on my '72. I originally made it for an '84 and it will fit a 60-66 longbed, too. My first racks were round pipe because I felt the round worked best on a 67-72...and round is equally strong in all directions. BUT... those dang fish mouths are a pain. So I started doing square tube and it looks fine on old trucks. They all have some squareness to them, too.
Here is the full rack. That's angle front and sides sitting on bed rails I like to use my truck for work some, but I didn't buy it to be a work truck. I had no choice but to put the racks on when my '92 croaked. What I want to make, hopefully this year, is something like the OP wanted. I want a headache rack pretty much as on my full rack. Legs tapered in with top bar just high enough to clear the body and little nubs extending off the legs above the top a couple inches as side stops. I want the back bow to only be mounted when I need it, but want it strong. I'm thinking to do the same base with angle three sides and make a way to linchpin the rear bow to mount. I think I'll incorporate a gusset at the bottom of the bow legs to provide a second mounting point for each side to stabilize it better. Either that, or make two pieces to mount between the front and rear with some sort of quick mount.

Re: Post your lumber rack pics
Waking a sleeping thread with a recent find. I cannot recall ever having seen an era correct lumber rack before spotting this one listed semi locally on CL for only $25.
I shot out to the guy's house and payed him faster than you can yell SCORE! After a bit of straightening, a little cutting/welding, some light fabrication, and then a total refinish, it's the perfect addition. NO drilling required! The ol' 62 C20 is fully looking the part as a proper vintage work truck lately. LOVING IT! |
