A/C questions
Ok I have a complete 73 C10 that I am using the cab and front end for my 85. All of the under dash/hood components are there for the factory AC in the 73. Would it be easier/cheaper to troubleshoot the factory AC and replace what is necessary or just scrap it and go aftermarket? I really like my clean firewall when I removed the factory air from the 85 but I really want/need AC. The 73 has been parked since 2006.

Re: A/C questions
If you want to keep a clean firwall then you will have to go aftermarket. The Vintage Air kits are nice and complete but they hurt your wallet pretty bad. The factory units can be troubshot and repaired with a little effort and much less expense.
So I would say what can you live with more, a large hole in your pocket or an ulgy firewall.

Re: A/C questions
As a start on the factory system, price all new hoses, dryer, and orifice. If the compressor is mechanically good, it still may need a seal job. Unless you know the history of the 73, might as well plan on replacing the heater core while things are apart. Also gives you a chance to blow the fuzz and dead mice out of the system. If the 85 doesn't have the hot side coil, price that as well. If the prices of these parts get close to the price of a new aftermarket system, you probably have your answer.

Re: A/C questions
If a/c is important to you then I would check the Vintage Air electronic system.
There are a couple of threads here from guys who did it. Don't forget, with a stock system you still have the old cable/vacuum heater/ac control, all of the vacuum actuators, worn out foam seals, vacuum lines, etc. All of those things need replacement sooner or later - sometimes replacement more than once. All electronic is the way to go. Having said that, my factory R12 system was converted to 134A but I added a salvaged electric fan on a relay from the a/c compressor and it cools very well now. It could still use a cross flow condenser but it is not a daily driver so it is good enough for me. |
