The difference between this motor and the 290hp motor, or even squeezing a bit over 300 out of it is the camshaft. These engines are identical otherwise.

Of course swapping the camshaft would negate the warranty and you'd have to crack open the engine, but it's a good starting point if you were already considering a rebuild on an old block.

Just adding on, I figured I'd have a little fun with this, I'm bored.

If i'm not mistaken, Edelbrock uses these blocks as their starting point for a few of their engines. The 310, 315, 320, 363, and 380hp engines, and their long block I believe start life with these short block assemblies. The E street long block is $4751. Here's a price breakdown of that same 350 crate with Edelbrock's add-on's

350 Crate: 1320
Edelbrock aluminum heads: 1029
Cam and lifter set: 160
Edelbrock valve covers: + 130
_________
$2639

Not bad, Edelbrock only charges you $2112 to swap a cam and heads onto a pre-assembled GM crate, which is even cheaper than the $1320 as I'm sure they pick them up as short blocks.

Re: Need an engine?

If I got one, I'd probably swap the cam in it.. It does void the warranty, but also 'not' having it installed by a GM dealership or ASE Mechanic voids the warranty as well... I'd treat it that it doesn't have a warranty, but being all new, I'd be ok with it

Re: Need an engine?

It says warranty begins when installed by an authorized GM dealer (Dealership) or qualified Independent Service Center (ASE Certified as I take it)... or over the counter (I assume purchased through Ebay) warranty begins on date of sale.. Do you see otherwise? Warranty also on valid when all required components are installed on same vehicle and on same invoice...

Re: Need an engine?

This is a fantastic deal.

Lefty, thanks for doing the quick math, you just saved me a step!

I'm ready to pull my 350 out this afternoon and I've been comparing short and long block options versus reworking my old one to a 383...

Anyway, thanks for sharing this. Might put an order in later today

that is hilarious cause there was no such warrenty when I purchased and installed the three crate motors that I installed and had no problem at all with the one that I had a slight problem the local gm dealer took care of it witn a smile
