starter question
i went from a 307 3 on the tree to a 350 auto. The flexplate i installed is 168 tooth. I should be able to use the old starter correct???

If the starter is from your manual transmission you cant. THere are different starters for manual and auto's. Manuals are bolted to the bellhousing, and autos are bolted to the block. You will need to buy you a Block mounted starter.

the flywheels should be the same, I think 400 smallblocks had different flywheels, someone correct me if I am wrong

If i'm not mistaken, starters for auto trannies have an allumium nosecone, while manual tranny starters have a cast iron nosecone.

If you are using a 168 tooth flex plate you will want to get a block mounted starter with the diagonal mounting holes. It is possible to have aluminum or cast iron noses on starters. If there ever were a distinction between the two noses it is not evident today.
