First. The GM wiring diagrams are in the RTFM links in my sig.

The starter is really a very simple circuit.

What is she doing when she won't start?
Not cranking?
OR.
Cranks but she won't kick over?

Every now and then the truck won't start. Lights come on but won't crank over. No clicking sounds either. First I replaced the battery cable for the positive because it was corroded. Sometimes when I turn the key, nothing. Sometimes it will click. The rest of the time it will try to crank over but doesn't. Help Please!

Sorry about the quick post at 01:00. I read the thread and answered my question. She isn't cranking.

You have a bad connection between the starter and the battery.

Either you aren't getting a reliable ground or you aren't getting a reliable hot connection to the starter... or both.
Since you replaced the hot cable I'll assume it's OK.

On a vehicle this old the main battery cables are suspect at best.
You replaced the Hot cable from the battery to the starter. Did you do the ground cable?
Is the ground attached to the stock location on the alternator bracket?

Clean up the battery ground cable connection on the alternator bracket and re-install with star washers and never seize.
Clean up both of the alternator bracket to engine bracket bolts and re-install with Never Seize.

This is for the P series with The L05 TBI engine. It's very close to the CK trucks. Rotate the battery 90° and you have a CK series V8. Engine ground is G111 body ground is G110.


A distant third would be the Start impulse wire from the ignition switch to the 8-32 "S" stud on the starter. Usually this is a purple wire but not always. It's real easy to clean this one up...

I am wondering if anybody can tell me if they will fit a 74. They are bucket seats and have the brackets. I can get a good deal on these if they will work. I just don't want to have to spend time drilling holes or anything to make them work. Any help/ideas?
