'66 4x4 Long Narrow ?

Came home today with the wife after running several errands and seen a strange light green 4x4 truck sitting in the driveway. Friend of mine who attends same church as we do was walking up the drive and says he was told by another friend I may have some 15x8 rallys for sale. I did, struck a deal and started talking about his new to him 4x4. Turns out he just bought a running, driving '66 long narrow wood floor 4x4, 283, oil bath air cleaner, 4 speed, bench seat, 16 inch 3 nub wheels, radio delete. Looks to me to be totally unmolested, said seller told him just over 102,000 miles on the clock. Wood be looks very nice, seller said was always treated with linseed oil twice a year. Not pristine but a VERY solid looking truck.

Being a 67-72 guy, don't know much about the 60-66 trucks altho I did have a '65 2wd long bed years ago as my first truck. Don't ever recall seeing a long narrow 4x4 before. Are they rare from back then or just un-common with not a lot of survivor, still running trucks? This was back when a 4x4 was put to use and not just a jacked up grocery getter.

Naturally I gave him this web site info so hopefully will see a new 60-66 member here before long. Wish I had some pics of it to post, really a clean looking ol' truck.

Re: '66 4x4 Long Narrow ?

Not sure about a long narrow bed, would you be talking about a long bed step side by chance? If so, Ive seen a couple of 9' step sides..... which look pretty long and narrow!

Re: '66 4x4 Long Narrow ?

Yep, guess long step side would be a better term, LOL. Being as my '71 4x4 is a long wide just used the opposite term of wide, which is narrow. Didn't measure it, next time I see him will run a tape measure down the inside of the bed. Are they at all rare? I would think pretty un-common for either 60-66 or 67-72 era trucks. I've seen exactly ONE 67-72 long step side in the 30 or so years I've been involved in the 67-72 trucks.

Re: '66 4x4 Long Narrow ?

Not sure how rare they are as the generally don't seem to be as sought after as the short steps and short fleets. That said, I started out looking for a long fleet and ended up with a long step (8' bed) which has grown on me. I have seen a few long steps in the '73 up style truck. Not as many as the 60 - 66 and 67 - 72 style though. Longer than 8' beds were a special order special use truck I would guess.

Thanks for posting that info. If I'm reading it correctly the '66 K10 1/2 ton lwb (long wheel base) stepside at 457 units is probably coming close to being considered a rare beast. Sure hope he joins and posts some pics of it. Really a solid looking unit.
