1967 GMC C3500 front brake conversion help

Hey guys, my family owns a 1967 one ton GMC, c series, and because I've been doing some mechanical work as a hobby, I'm starting to dive into this truck as a project in bits. Right now I'm wanting to do a front brake conversion to discs from drums (already got the old brakes off) and I was wondering where to find a conversion kit for a c3500. Online it seems like they only exist for c10's, and I've done quite a bit of digging. Along with this, I was wondering, can I use the stock spindles that come on the truck, or does a conversion require a different set?
All help appreciated! Thanks
Andy.

Welcome to the site, lots of great info in here. OK, just as the smaller trucks can benefit from discs off of a later truck[73-87] the one tons can too. Jst find a one ton in the salvage/scrap yard and then remove the whole crossmember. Get it home and replace all of it or just the arms steering spindles and brake stuff. See the front crossmember is very close to the same so you can either change it out or just leave the crossmember alone and change all the stuff bolted to it. Good luck. Jim

Thanks Jim! This question probably seems a little far-fetched, but my dad was interested. We also have a 1981 ford f350 is there any chance that the cross member would translate over to the GMC?

Re: 1967 GMC C3500 front brake conversion help

My approach would be to find a pair of disk brake spindles, rotors and a the proper proportioning valve from a later model 70, 71 or 72. you can usually find these items in a u-pullit or some other self-service wrecking yard. (most people are looking for half ton stuff) I would be kinda leery of used calipers, sometimes they dont work right. you can get rebuilt calipers from NAPA,(thats where I got my last pair.) The OEM stuff seems to work the best although sourced from a newer vehicle. Dont forget NEW rubber brake hoses. All of the old stuff is at least 40 years old. Good luck with your conversion.

Re: 1967 GMC C3500 front brake conversion help

Now you don't HAVE you use the crossmember set up from the square you can bolt every bit of it to your crossmember and not have to take loose the motor. The control arms will bolt right up to your crossmember. But if your going to a junk/scrap yard to get those parts you may be able to get them to whack the frame right behind the crossmember and it might give you the box you need for a power steering conversion as well. Just a thought. Jim

I recommend using all the suspension off of a 73-87 c30.
Including all the steering.
Like previously said,... Don't swap the crossmember itself, just bolt the parts to your existing crossmember.
