Re: whats the best winch??

To the original poster: If the truck currently has a 2000lb winch on it, almost ANY winch will work for that application. 2000lb is an ATV winch, used for pulling a 500lb vehicle out of mud (because a 2000lb winch is actually only about a 600lb winch once you get a couple layers of cable wound on that drum).

With that being said, if you ever plan to actually use it to winch your truck in any way, and not just the plow, I wouldn't go anything under 8000lbs, 10000 is better, with 12000 being better still.

As for the discussion on electrical draw, it's pretty much ALL in your battery. The difference between a 95amp alternator or 130amp alternator is almost pointless when you're drawing 390 amps. Your battery is capable of that kind of power (typically 800-1000 amps), but your alternator is not. Now, 390 amps is max draw@full load, you're probably pulling less than half that when normally winching, but it's STILL a significant draw that your alternator usually can't keep up with. Battery Battery Battery.
