Original Tire Size for 59?
Hey guys- three quick questions about tire size on my 59' 1/2 ton fleetside with 5.5 inch x 15 inch rims:
#1. What size tire originally came from the factory on this truck? (I assume it was bias-ply?) #2. If I buy a set of Coker Classic Nostalgia Radial tires for my truck (see link below), will the 225 series be narrow enough to avoid rubbing the steering arm? #3. For a "Dairy Queen" ice cream run and "only drive when it's nice outside weekend fun truck", will bias-ply tires suit my needs (very little highway driving? Previous owner installed 235 series tires on the truck and I noticed a "rub" line on the inside of the drivers tire where it had been rubbing the steering link. I like the height of the 225 to fill up the front fender-well of my truck. My truck is all stock by the way. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cok-597020 Thanks Tod |

Re: Original Tire Size for 59?
I've researched my 59 GMC 1/2 ton and I learned that they could be ordered (in Canada ) with either 15" or 16". I'll check tire size later and post.
In the meantime I've purchased the Coker Classic radials for 16" with the 4" wide whitewall that are 31.5" tall. I'm confident that I'll have room to turn and being that being they are radials, no issues at highway speeds. All with stock suspension.

Re: Original Tire Size for 59?
Thanks dwcsr for posting the sizes!
I'd like to add that if you are looking for the original rims, they will be three clip...not 6 clip and 5" bead width and not 4 1/2". They were only available in the late 50's the 3 clip 5" bead width.

Re: Original Tire Size for 59?
Its weird seeing all these 15 inch tire replies , my dads 58 3200 came stock with 16.5"x6" Split Rims , I did not even know they had 15" rims for trucks back then , when my dad swapped out to a V8 is when he went to the 15" and that was in the late (1969) 60's , he only swapped because of the issue of airing up a flat on a split rim , and the safety issue it caused
Anyway , i always thought all the trucks back then only came with 16.5" which would have been the standard , at least that is all i ever saw growing up in Southern California , i never saw a truck with anything but 16.5" split rims until the late 60's early 70's , in fact my dads truck was the first i saw that had switched to 15" non split rims , granted i was only 9 in 69 , but i was around cars and trucks and racing , etc all my life , and just do not remember any trucks with 15" Oh well , must be a East Coast/Northern thing !! |
